Teaching method

Teaching methodology combines lecture and discussion of texts assigned for each class.

Evaluation method

Método de avaliação - The preparation of the assignments for each class and class participation is a relevant element of the evaluation(10%), Students should write two essays: one regarding a poem, in form of a written test(40%), and a second one analyzing a topic of Pessoa Studies of their choice, related to what was discussed in class(50%)

Subject matter

The study of the several aspects of Pessoa's work will be articulated with the analysis of the main contributions of critical tradition, from the critics of the Presença review to recent debates in Pessoa Studies. The analysis of examples of the diferent genres of the work (heteronymic and orthonymic poetry, fictional and dramatic prose, criticism, correspondence, philosophical and esoteric texts, editorial projects and plans) will be supported by the discussion of critical standpoints regarding the main questions involved (different notions of literature, authorship, the book, notions of edition or the fragment). This analysis will give particular emphasis to the specific position of each text within the whole of the work – deriving from its chronology, the writing circumstances or authorial attribution –, as well as their relation to other literary and philosophical texts of modernity.
