History of Art Technology and Materials II


The course programs, of HTPA I and II, are restricted to Western art, with some occasional incursions in previous times and civilizations. HTPA, although taught in two semestres, is conceived as a single curriclar unit; it is a MCR curricular unit where knowledge from areas such as Art History and Chemistry is crossed, aiming at an interdisciplinary observation, useful to the area of ​​Conservation and Restoration.
The conceptual framework (formal and aesthetic), built in History of Art, related to the representation systems, as well as knowledge related to the inherent ideological and social circumstances, namely what refers to the social status of the artists, dialogues with the materials of  the Work. This crossing, and how to do it, is one of the goals of HTPA know-how.
The artistic literature and the contemporary criticism of the written sources used to study the artistic techniques is the fertile ground that allows, among others, to quickly awake in the student the idea that the construction of the history and the material of which the Work is made is a complex thing. Treaties and other written sources are critically analyzed, and the result used in the historical reconstruction of materials and artistic techniques of the past.
In practical classes, the work developed is responsibility of the student. In other words, the experimental protocol is largely conceived by the students, after discussion with the professors.

Teaching method

Teaching is based on theoretical-practical classes (TP), which include seminars, practical laboratory classes (PL) and tutorial support.
In the TP classes, the UC subjects are taught according to their program and in the laboratory classes, practical works are carried out that materialize and exemplify the theoretical contents. Thematic seminars are also organized
The work carried out in practical classes is evaluated through mini-reports delivered up to one week after completion of the work, contributing to 50% of the final grade.
The theoretical component is assessed through the presentations of the seminar dedicated to the treaties and a global test, with or without consultation (according to the students'' choice), worth 50% of the final grade. Alternatively, the theoretical component can be assessed in an exam (following the timetable proposed by the FCT)
So NF=0.50xNT+0.50xNP.

Evaluation method

The HTPA II assessment has two components: theoretical-practical assessment (40%) and laboratory assessment (60%).

The theoretical-practical assessment is individual and obtained through:
1. Test (June 6th, 40%)

Laboratory evaluation is obtained through:
1. Painting Module | Guided report (25%)
2. Ceramics Module | Guided report (25%)
3. Contemporary Art Module | Comment (10%)
Written assignments are carried out in groups and delivered up to 1 week after the completion of each Module. Guided reports must have a maximum of 1500 words; the comment must have a maximum of 1000 words.

(The grade for each component will be rounded to the nearest tenth)

Final considerations:
1) Approval of HTPA II requires obtaining a minimum grade of 9.5 for each of the assessment components (theoretical-practical and laboratory).
2) The frequency is valid for 5 years.
3) Improvement of grade of theoretical-practical component can be done through oral discussion.
4) When taking any test, they must also take into account the provisions of paragraph 3 of article 10 of the FCT NOVA Assessment Regulations, “When fraud or plagiarism is proven, in any of the assessment elements of a CU, students directly involved are outright disapproved in the UC, (…).”
