Subject matter

Fundamental concepts on Waste Management: waste definition and classification; European Waste Catalogue and EWL; difference between waste, by-product and EoW; the main operations in an Waste Management System; Priorities for WM Strategies- prevention, material and organic recycling, energy recovery and landfill; Waste treatments.

Mechanical treatment: Unit processes including size reduction, separation, transport and compaction; material recovery facilities (MRFs): defining material recovery facilities, types of MRFs, design of MRFs.

Circular Economy Analysis: concepts, definitions, CE and waste hierarchy principle; tools for CE: life cycle assessment, environmental product declaration, environmental labels and CE indicators.

Case study 1- Glass and recycling technologies.

Case study 2- Polymers and recycling technologies.

Case study 3- Metal and recycling technologies.
