Hydrology

Objectives

 At the end of this course the student will have acquired knowledge, skills and competencies that allow:  

  1. Define a watershed and identified is physiographic characteristics;
  2. Characterized the precipitation regime over a watershed;
  3. Calculate the evaporation from water bodies and the potential evapotranspiration from a region;
  4. Understand the infiltration, percolation and drainage process of water in the soil;
  5. Estimation of runoff, peak flows and corresponding water volumes;
  6. Calculate soil losses by water erosion and sediment transport by the runoff;
  7. Knowledge of methods taught in the scope of the discipline, towards a theoretical and practical approach of problems and questions regarding hydrology and quantitative analysis of water resources.

Teaching method

Lectures:  presentation of the concepts and correpondent implementation techniques in Hydrology.

Labs: presentation and exemplification of techniques, instrumentation and informatic tools in Hydrology; accompaniment of lab exercise developed by the students.

Evaluation method

Requisites to obtain Frequency:

Mandatory attendance to Lab sessions – minimum of 2/3 of classes;

Development of six components project assignment, to be performed essentially during lab sessions.

Grades from 0 (minimum) to 20 (maximum).

Lab experiment reports (six): weight of 20% of final grade and mandatory to obtain frequency.

Two tests: weight of 40% each of final grade.

To obtain approval students must have a medium grade of 9.5 or superior in the tests.

Subject matter

Hydrological cycle: general subjects; hydrological balance.

Watershed analysis: delimitation; phisiographic characteristics.

Precipitation: classification; precipitation intensity and depth; statistics and hydrology.

Interception: concept and processes.

Evaporation: concepts; measurement; calculation; factors that influence evaporation.

Evapotranspiration: concepts; potential and effective evapotranspiration; potential evapotranspiration.

Flow in the saturated and the unsaturated zone.

Hydraulic conductivity.

Darcy’s law.

Infiltration, percolation and drainage.

Surface runoff: river flow measurement; hydrological series; reservoir dimensioning; watershed runoff components; hydrographs; flooding; urban surface runoff.  

Soil erosion.

Sediment transport.
