Project in Materials Engineering
Objectives
By the end of this curricular unit (CU) the student will be able to:
- Analyze a problem or technological situation;
- Make a bibliographic research in order to establish an informed approach to the problem;
- To integrate the acquired knowledge on Materials Science and Engineering in a laboratory training project or in a industrial project;
- To develop critical approach in the analysis and interpretation of experimental data;
- To improve the skills to write and to orally present research results.

Bibliography
References adequate to each of the research themes chosen by each student.
Teaching method
- Seminars promoted by the Library of FCT NOVA library related with research, organization and scientific bibliographic management, with the purpose of preparing the written report. Likewise, seminars on scientific ethics, time management and presentation of scientific papers are given.
- Bibliographic research and tracing of the research project (under supervision of the supervisor).
Evaluation method
Evaluation of the Materials Engineering Project curricular unit comprises 3 components, namely: performance, final report, and public presentation.
The weights of these components in the final grade are as follows:
- performance = 40% (advisor or advisors)
- report = 40% (30% = advisor(s) = average of internal and external advisor evaluations, if any; 70% = examiner)
- presentation = 20% (30% = internal advisor; 30% = examiner; 40% = president of the jury)
Subject matter
Execution of an experimental work in the scientific area of Materials Science and Engineering with the level of complexity equivalent to the subjects of the 3rd year of the 1st cycle. This work may be carried out in the framework of ongoing R&D projects in the Department of Materials Science, CENIMAT | i3N and CEMOP | UNINOVA or in an industrial environment. In any case what is wanted is that this curricular unit serves as a complement to UROP or UPOP UC and in this way the student has the time corresponding to 12 ECTS to carry out the work.
In addition to this work the student will have to attend different training actions on: Mendeley; Scopus; BOn; Latex; Ethics in Research; Scientific Writing; Scientific and technological presentations; Time management.
Preparation of a final report and public presentation of the results obtained.
