Sustainable Soil Management and Remediation Technologies

Objectives

At the end of this UC the student will have acquired knowledge, skills and competences to attain the soil functions criticality in the resilience to environmental problems, namely climate change. The student will understand the early warnings associated with the critical limits of this interface, and should be able to present solutions aimed at sustainable soil management, contributing to land degradation neutrality. The student will also be able to identify and interpret the different forms of soil degradation, in particular contamination, associated with different classes of pollutants and their behavior in a site. The student will develop skills that will allow them to assess a contaminated site, understanding ProSolos, and select the most appropriate remediation technologies for solving environmental engineering problems. Students will also develop skills for transmission and exposure of acquired knowledge.

Teaching method

In TP classes, the successive topics of the UC program will be explained and discussed. During each class, whenever possible, a practical problem will be solved, the solution of which requires the application of previously learned knowledge or in the course of it. Group work will be developed, whose objective is to consolidate the concepts that were learned in class, discussing them with the teacher. In PL classes students will be provided with operational contact with the techniques taught.

· A test that deals with the theoretical-practical knowledge of the UC.

· Group work, written, and oral presentation to the class and teachers, with respective feedback.

Subject matter

1.Soil functions. Their criticality in the soil system''s resilience to climate change. Selected effects of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems. Soils under climate change: carbon storage and soil erosion. Soil quality degradation. EU Soil Strategy for 2030. 2. FAO Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management. 3. Relevant properties for soil contamination/remediation: texture, OM; CTC, soil water, pH. Soil Contamination by different pollutant classes. Acquired resistances and its importance in soil health and food chain. 4. ProSolos. Management of Contaminated Sites in EU and other countries. 5. Integrated methodology for contaminated sites assessment. 6. Remediation techniques: In-situ and ex-situ processes (on-site e off-site): Thermal, Physical-chemical, Electro-chemical, Biological. 7. Case studies. Verification of carried out remediation measures.
