Applications in Molecular Biology

Objectives

The UC aims to ensure that students acquire skills in practical laboratory techniques, their analysis and interpretation, in the context of international scientific literature and integration in the context of a research group / project.
At the end of the course, students should be able to understand cellular and molecular biology techniques, their applications in different contexts and critically analyze bibliographic information and / or databases. They must also have performed at least one laboratory technique.

Bibliography

To be defined at the beginning of the training. It will consist of scientific articles associated with the internship and CU theme.

Teaching method

Teaching methodologies will include theoretical and tutorial follow-up and practical execution. Teaching methodologies will include theoretical and tutorial follow-up and practical execution.

Evaluation method

The evaluation will be continuous and carried out taking into account the students' attendance and punctuality, the preparation and prior planning of the protocols and activities, the proper execution of these, and a critical analysis of the results obtained. The student will be accompanied and evaluated by the supervisor in the continuous evaluation component that will correspond to 1/3 of the grade. The student must also prepare a final report (1/3 of the grade). The discussion and analysis of articles / techniques will be evaluated taking into account the critical analysis, the understanding of applicability in other contexts and the discussion with peers (1/3 of the grade).

Subject matter

It will consist of 2 components: 1) Application of a Molecular and / or Cellular Biology technique. At the beginning of the school year (after choosing the specialty), the students will be assigned to the students by the CU coordinator an activity of laboratory practice integrated in project and / or diagnosis, which will be guided by a member of the CU team. The student must participate in the regular activities of the research laboratory (example: laboratory meetings / Journal club, etc.). This activity will involve the generation of data for analysis and production of a report. Examples: Differential expression of genes in cells and organs, eukaryotic culture (including intracellular parasites) and prokaryotes. Cloning. Flow cytometry.
2) Discussion of 3 scientific articles associated with recent techniques of molecular and cellular biology. The discussion will take place 1 to 1 with the tutor and / or supervisor of the CU. You will have a 3 session with the following format. A) choice of the article, which includes justification, applicability in the student's scientific career, where aspects of impact, scientific novelty, and where the specific objectives of the other sessions will be defined; B) critical discussion of the article; C) Journal club with the other students of CU.
