Human Parasitosis

Objectives

After this unit, students should be able to:
1. To know the principal characteristics of major human parasites: life cycle and relationship with symptoms and pathogenesis.
2. To know the epidemiology of major human parasites.
3. To understand the importance of life cycle to laboratorial diagnoses.
4. To understand the importance of the relation between parasite and host characteristics, and environment to the control of the disease.
5. To apply knowledge to control of diseases.

Teaching method

Theoretical and theory/practical classes, in which the concepts to be communicated will be done with the support of PowerPoint presentations. Class discussions based in the resolution of problems (clinical story or challenges in disease control) taking in account the knowledge acquired in the theoretical and theory/practical classes.

Evaluation method

Students with at least 2/3 of frequency will be evaluated with a multiple choice exam.

Subject matter

I. Epidemiology, physiopathology, clinic, diagnosis, treatment and control of the following diseases: Leishmaniasis, Human African Trypanosomiasis, American Trypanosomiasis, malaria, intestinal protozoa.
II. The Filariases: Lymphatic filariasis, Onchocerciasis, Loa-loa.
III. Helminths: Hookworm infection, Ascariasis, Strongyloidiasis, Trichuriasis, Enterobiasis; Taenia solium and T. saginata, Cysticercosis.
IV. Food borne trematodes; Schistosomiasis.
