Safety and Laboratory Manipulation
Objectives
After this unit, students should be able to: 1. Understand the concept of Biosafety and biological agents’ classification according to the different levels of laboratories in the fields of Microbiology and Parasitology. 2. Know the biological samples transport rules. 3. Understand concepts of decontamination, asepsis and sterilization. 4. Know the different types of Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs). 5. Know legislation and international policy in the context of laboratory safety. 6.Understand the concept of 'Quality Control (QC)' – Standardization of laboratory procedures applied to the preparation of culture media, reagents, glassware and equipment, ISO and CE mark; Legislation (EU directives). 7.Understand the importance of internal and external QC. 8. Understand the role of Lab's Reference and Proficiency Tests.

Teaching method
Lectures (L), Theoretical and Practical (TP) and Laboratory Practice (LP), all of these learning are in line with the objetives, allowing the student can frame the knowledge acquired in initials lectures. Also the tutorials encourage an active student interaction with teachers, allowing answer questions and discuss aspects debated in class.
Evaluation method
Students with at least 2/3 frequency held writing a final test (multiple choice test) with 40 issues covering subject taught. - Rating Scale 0-20. - Approval with rating equal to or greater than 10.Students with at least 2/3 frequency, are evaluated through active participation in class and final written exam (multiple-choice test). Rating scale of 0 to 20. Approval is given with a rating greater or equal to 10.
Subject matter
I. Theoretical classes (Lectures) Biosafety and biological risk. Decontamination, asepsis and sterilization. Quality control (QC) in the Labor. II. Theoretical and Practical Biosecurity and accidents in laboratory environment: responsibilities and behavior. Resolution of exercises applied to laboratory practice (solution preparation and culture media; dilutions from stock solutions; reconstitution primers ...). III. Laboratorial Practice Animal experimentation and the laboratory - Visit to the Animal house (Bioterio) at the IHMT-NOVA. Discussion of several basic concepts related to laboratory animal science; Legislation and accreditation of facilities, people and projects. Principle of the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Refine. Laboratory Manipulation - Titration a phage lysate. Cell culture. Count of bacteria (with Petroff-Hauser chamber).
