Neglected Tropical Diseases


After this unit, students should be able to:
1. To know the concept of Neglected tropical diseases, health programs and global initiatives.
2. To know the concepts of control, elimination and eradication.
3. To know the key interventions.
4. To know the agents of the diseases and their life cycle, vectors, epidemiology, clinic and treatment.
5. To apply control strategies.
6. To discuss challenges to the different control strategies.

Teaching method

Theoretical and theory/practical classes, in which the concepts to be communicated will be done with the support of PowerPoint presentations.

Evaluation method

Students with at least 2/3 of frequency will be evaluated with a written essay.

Health systems: concept, objectives, building blocks.
Plans and health programs: concept, articulation / integration with health systems.
Global health initiatives: concept and examples.
II. Neglected tropical diseases.
Characteristics of Neglected tropical diseases.
Concept of control, elimination and eradication.
Key interventions.
Water , sanitation and hygiene; health education.
III. A number of Neglected tropical diseases: Life cycles, vectors, epidemiology, clinic and treatment.
Lymphatic filariasis; Onchocerciasis; Dracunculiasis; Schistosomiasis; foodborne trematodiases; Cysticercosis; Echinococcosis; Rabies; Chagas disease; Trachoma.
