Nutrition through the lifecycle

Objectives

a)     To acquire knowledge about the main Human life cycle stages, and recognize the importance of diet and nutrition during the human life cycle;

b)     To understand nutritional needs, nutritional recommendations and food-based dietary guidelines;

c)     To acquire knowledge and to develop skills of diet and nutrition in reproductive health, pregnancy and lactation, recognizing the nutritional metabolic programming effects and transgenerational impact of nutrition;

d)     To acquire knowledge on infancy and childhood development, and skills within the ambit of diet and Nutrition in the distinct developmental stages of infancy and childhood;

e)     To acquire knowledge about the adolescent and specific nutritional needs, as well as to understand the challenges of promoting a healthy Lifestyle during adolescence, recognizing the importance of diet and Nutrition during adolescence to reproductive health and of its transgenerational effects;

f)       To acquire knowledge about diet and Nutrition in the adult years, and to develop skills of nutritional education during adulthood;

g)     To acquire knowledge in nutritional needs and physical exercise practice during the life cycle, as well as to develop skills of nutrition for athletes from childhood till adulthood

h)     To understand the aging process, and to acquire knowledge about the specific nutritional needs in aging.

Teaching method

The teaching methodologies are consistent with the learning objectives. Lectures deliver a complete and detailed exposition of the syllabus. The theoretical classes offer a detailed and complete exposition of the programmatic contents and broaden the critical spirit of the student in relation to the subjects presented. The individual written work aims to promote research on state of the art literature and its critical appraisal, as well as knowledge acquisition about diet and nutrition in a specific life cycle stage.

Theoretical training provides the acquisition and theorical application of knowledge, development of skills and motivation necessary to fulfill the educational goals of the course. The evaluation of learning and teaching are implemented to enable the identification of strengths and weaknesses of the course as an important gauging tool with the aim of continuous improvement.

Evaluation method

Main lectures with exposure of the contents of the course.

The evaluation will be made taking into account the following parameters:  Individual written work, based on atate of the art literature, about diet and nutrition during a specific stage of the life cycle (100%).

Students with a grade equal to or greater than 9,5 values, are approved.

Exist two evaluation periods. The 2nd evaluation period will only be held if required by the students and by agreement with the conductor.
