Subject matter

Required reading: Heidegger, "European nihilism", in Heidegger, Nietzsche, vol. 2, Stuttgart, Klett-Cotta, 2020 (8th ed).

Main topic of the lectures: Heidegger's critical analysis of the Nietzschean thesis that the history of Western philosophy corresponds to the history of nihilism.

Fundamental questions to be answered: 1. What do Nietzsche and Heidegger understand by "nihilism"? 2. In what sense can nihilism be said to characterize the history of Western philosophy (and the history of the West in general)? 3. Why does Heidegger consider Nietzschean thinking to be nihilistic or metaphysical? 4. How does Heidegger relate Nietzsche's thesis on Western nihilism to other Nietzschean doctrines such as the will to power, the eternal return, the transvaluation of all values, and so forth? 5. What are Nietzsche's and Heidegger's proposals to face the phenomenon of nihilism?
