The Arts and the Colonial Experience

Objectives

Understanding of the key concepts, movements and artistic production in the territories of the Portuguese empire in Early Modern Period (late 15th to mid 18th century)
To acquire knowledge and a critical approach about societies and artistic productions in different geographies, promoting interdisciplinary debate
To stimulate critical and creative reflection on the relationship between artistic objects, material culture, and the built with time, space and the circumstances in which they were produced
Acquire theoretical and methodological skills and knowledge of documentary sources (written, visual, material) related to the History of Art
Acquire knowledge and skills that allow problem solving from a spatio-temporal and comparative perspective;
Provide involvement with the research and science communication developed in the associated RUs
Develop research skills and autonomy necessary to carry out a dissertation

Teaching method

The teaching of this course is provided in an asynchronous e-learning regime supported by the use of Moodle - provision of written resources (texts, questions, links to libraries, archives, and online resources; discussions related to the syllabus) and visuals resources (videos, powerpoints with images, links to image repositories, museums, collections, videos at the minute of museological institutions) - and Colibri platforms (shared and/or individual sessions, with image and sound), fostering the reading of texts and the discussions of the topics raised by the syllabus and by doubts of the students.

2 - Agents; Geographic, social, and cultural spaces; Production centers, diffusion and acquisition circuits.
3 - The architectural heritage in the Portuguese colonial world: urbanism and military, religious, and civil architecture.
3 - The religious artistic heritage in the Portuguese colonial world: missionary art - program, typologies, models -; liturgical implements and devotional objects.
4 - The artistic heritage in the Portuguese colonial world: indigenous production and the command of art: textiles, ivories, furniture, ceramics and jewelery.
5 - The historical-artistic relationship between European powers and their overseas empires; Impact of the Colonial Art in the Kingdom: reception and consumption, collecting, influences on production and taste.
