Economics, Society and Innovation in the Contemporary World

Objectives

Knowledge and understanding of the main conjunctures that marked the World economy and, especially the European, throughout the twentieth century. Ability to critically reflect on the process of growth and development that has characterized the World and European economy and society, having in mind its scientific and technological framework from the First World War until the end of the Cold War, namely the specific contexts that characterized the succession of wars and crises that marked the twentieth century. Knowledge and awareness of current problems and challenges in terms of circular economy and sustainability.

Teaching method

Seminar, combining sessions of the presentation of the nature and problematics associated with key issues of the program with the presentation and discussion of texts and topics by the students. The planning and scheduling of the activities is defined, presented and distributed at the beginning of the academic cycle. The presentation of the subjects, accompanied by the identification, in the classroom and via web, of the documents, sources and reference bibliography, and other resources, namely in the web, assumes and appeals, beyond the expository and explanatory dimension, scenarios of interpretation, questioning and discussion of the contents.

Evaluation method

Evaluation Methodologies - Participation in the seminars, the preparation and presentation of a small written assignment of bibliographic synthesis, the preparation, presentation and class discussion of a written essay (20 p.) drawn through the research in primary sources and bibliography. Tutorial follow up of the diverse evaluation elements. (100%)

Subject matter

The program has four parts. First, of an introductory nature, it addresses epistemological and methodological issues by looking at the identification and appreciation of the latest trends and current perspectives within the framework of economic and social history. The second studies the 'heavy trends' of large space economies, encompassing the perception of the characteristics related to the formation of the contemporary economy from a planetary perspective, taking into account the process of internationalization / globalization / globalization, the transformations that occurred following the end of the Cold War and the new realities marked by the impact of emerging economies. The third is dedicated to the study of the main conjunctures that marked the world economy, and especially the European economy, throughout the twentieth century, from the Belle Époque to the crisis of 2009. Fourth, it focuses on current issues of circular economy and sustainability.
