Data Analisys - Quantitative methods

Objectives

The goal of the Quantitative Methods Curricular Unit is to capacitate students with the mastery of the necessary competencies to the preparation, collection and analysis of data in a quantitative research strategy.
At the end of this Curricular Unit, students should be able to:
1) Recognize the issue of the quantitative research in social sciences and in education
2) Explain the general principles and main sampling techniques
3) Critically evaluate sampling procedures used in real examples
4) Conceive a questionnaire survey
5) Define the basic statistic notions associated with quantitative research
6) Interpret univariate and bivariate analysis of quantitative data
7) Perform univariate and bivariate analysis of quantitative data through SPSS software
8) Present in a rigorous way the analysis results and their interpretation

Teaching method

We will privilege demonstrative and active methods, using exposition and interrogation to the clarification of theoretical notions. Demonstrative methods are based on the illustration of ways of doing, namely in the design of sampling procedures, the elaboration of questionnaire surveys and univariate and bivariate analysis of quantitative data, in particular when using SPSS software. Active methods lie in students' participation in the realization of exercises proposed in class and in the application of the obtained knowledge.
