Systems Physiology

Objectives

To understand how the major organic systems work, namely the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, renal and gastrointestinal systems, in a physiological approach (i.e., non-pathological), as well as to understand the regulatory mechanisms underneath. In particular, the student should be capable to describe the regulatory mechanisms of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, used herein as models os physiological regulation.

The student should also be able to interpret the functional meaning of the major physiological parameters.

Teaching method

The following methodologies will be used: expository and tutoring.

Evaluation method

The assessment is based on 2 components:

i)  Evaluation - Individual Minitests:
- 5 Minitests - 1 test / Module at the end of the respective Thematic Module - Duration of 30 min
- Online, using the Socrative application
- Dates and times of the mini-tests:

- Physiology of the Nervous System - Friday, 5/November, 17:00-17:30
- Cardiovascular Physiology - Monday, 22/November, 17:00-17:30
- Respiratory Physiology - Monday, December 6, 5:00pm-5:30pm
- Renal and Acid-Base Physiology - Monday, December 20, 5:00 pm-5:30 pm - Gastrointestinal Physiology - Friday, January 7th, 5:00 pm-5:30 pm

- 75% of the final assessment (5 x 15%)

ii) Global Assessment - Global individual test at the end of the semester:
- Comprises the 5 thematic modules
- In person, from the 10th to the 15th of January 2022, on a day and time to be scheduled - 25% of the final assessment

NOTE: approval in the UC Physiology of Systems presupposes:
- Minimum classification of 8.00 values in each of the components - i) Evaluation

Evaluation and ii) Global Assessment
- Minimum of 9.50 values in the Final Evaluation, calculated using the expression

Final Evaluation = 0.75 x (Evaluation) + 0.25 x (Global Evaluation).

Subject matter
