Transport Infrastructures

Objectives

It is intended that the students obtain the necessary knowledge to the planning, conception and design of transportation infrastructures, especially road infrastructures, with focus on geometric design but also considering the basic concepts of  earthworks, drainage, paving and safety equipment.

Teaching method

In parallel to the lectures on transportation infrastructures and the expositions on exercises concerning the geometric design, students work in a group to conceive a road section project, which includes geometric design, earthworks, drainage, paving and safety equipment. The evaluation comprises the elements prepared for the group project, the attendance of lectures and practical sessions and a final exam. 

 

Evaluation method

PROVISIONAL

The evaluation includes three components: theoretical-practical (50%); project and exercises (50%).

The theoretical-practical component comprises two written tests during the semester.
The project is prepared in a group with a maximum of four students.

In the exercises component, the exercises from the Practical Manual are presented in class and delivered throughout the semester. Their delivery represents 25% of the final mark. The presentations are made by the working groups.

Approval requires attendance to at least 2/3 of classes, a project grade higher than 9.5/20, an average grade in tests higher than 9/20 and a minimum final grade of 9,5/20.

Students who attended classes and did the project, in the school year 2020/2021, are dismissed from attending classes and doing the road project work. They will have equivalence of the component "project and exercises".

4. Restrictions for the conception of transportation infrastructures.

5. Driving conditions. Level-of-service and road capacity. Definition of speed and sight distances.

6. Horizontal alignment and vertical alignment. Restrictions to geometric design.

7. Cross-section elements.

8. Crossing. Types and characteristics.

9. Basic elements for earthworks, drainage, pavements and safety equipment.
