Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Design
Objectives
Main objective of this course is the design and sizing of water treatment facilities, through the simulation of real situations, including the most relevant steps, summarizing and gathering the knowledge already acquired by students in previous CU and seeking to encourage the analysis and decision making.

Teaching method
In this CU there will be two group assignments during the semester (9 weeks to carry out the work of WWTP, five weeks to carry out the work of WTP). For each of them there will be set weekly goals, corresponding to the development of the most important steps leading to the realization of a project, to be developed by the students during class
Evaluation method
The evaluation of this CU includes the execution of two projects (teamwork -WWTP and WTP) and the individual discussion of each one. A final individual teste will be performed.
Cource approval requires the delivery of the two designsworks and attendance to the exam, as well as the completion of the discussion of the designworks. It is also mandatory attendance of two-thirds of the classes.
Subject matter
Approach is similar for both water and wastewater treatment plant design exercices:
1 - for a given horizon, analysis of qualitative characteristics, estimation of quantitative characteristics and analysis of quality objectives
2 - setting the treatment line (liquid and solid phase) and the linear diagram, based in the previous work
3 - preparation of mass balances and pre-sizing
4 - implementation and hydraulic profile
5- preparation of texts and draws
6- estimated costs (WWTP)
