Seminars Cycle I
Objectives
The transdisciplinarity present in the Curricular Module program aims to:
- Introduce new perspectives of the curricular models covered in the first quarter of the Postgraduate Programme;
- Training for active and critical listening;
- Foster guided, assisted and reflective individual reading;
- Provide a systemic view of marine knowledge;
- Raise awareness of critical citizenship in marine sustainable development;
- Provide tools that allow the creation of new networks to investigate in the marine sector;
- Stimulate in-depth analysis of case studies in the marine area to innovate and undertake in the blue economy;
- Develop sensitivity to the diversity of knowledge intrinsic to marine communities;
- Capacity building for the creation of innovative solutions in the face of sustainability issues in the area of the sea.

Teaching method
The qualitative methodology of direct interaction is applied to reinforce the structure of the construction of creativity and new knowledge related to the themes of the first quarter of the MSTS Postgraduate Programme. In this sense, six national and international experts are invited to give seminars on the topics included in the Curricular Units of the first quarter, who previously provided a text on the same. The seminars will take place with an interval of two weeks during the first quarter with 3 hours. Interspersed with each seminar, a collective class will be given.
In that sense, a set of three methods is used, as well as their structured and sequential application of a didactic-pedagogical nature, with the general objective of exploring an interactive seminar, namely: ii) Individual reading of a text (previously provided by the speaker) and research by the student; ii) Buzz-Group – group discussion on a well-defined theme and the construction of a synthesis; iii) Post-seminar collective debate – collective interaction in a debate moderated by one of the professors of this UC, on the subject.
The Buzz-Group and the Post-seminar collective debate will be carried out in each seminar, and its 3 hours will be divided into: 45’ group debate and construction of a synthesis of the debate (students only); 90’ seminar (expert); 30’ collective interaction (Q&A); 15’ closing (expert).
The evaluation will be continuous and will take into account: attendance and active participation in the seminars; integration in the discussion in groups and in the collective; and written and oral quality of the final work covering the topic(s) of the UC.
The requested work will be in the form of a review, which will deal with one of the topics discussed in the seminars, to be chosen by the student.

Subject matter
Concepts and theoretical-methodological perspectives in topic in the areas of:
- Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Processes
- Ecosystem Services in the Blue Economy
- Marine Social Sciences
- Sustainable Assessment for Blue Economy
- Scouting Technology (Robotic)
- Marine Resources and Sustainable Fisheries
All contents will be taught by national and international experts on the respective topics in an interactive seminar format. The lectures will be professors, researchers, managers, entrepreneurs and technicians from public or private institutions that contribute to the affirmation of the sustainable blue economy.
The syllabus focuses on transdisciplinary context, using opportunities, challenges, and risks, connecting students to the different praxis (theory and practices) of the marine context.
