Organic Synthesis

Objectives

To understand the fundamental concepts underlying the strategic planning and efficient syntheses of simple organic molecules and to be able to compare them in terms of yields and strategies.

To provide an understanding of how to build molecules and which fragments of smaller molecules to use.

To acquire knowledge, skills and competences that enable the understanding of published literature work and apprehend the experimental work involved in a more complex synthesis.

Teaching method

Subjects are presented and explained to students in class (2,5h/week) with an emphasis on practical cases to stimulate the active learning.

Throughout the semester, students complete on the lab a small synthesis involving 2 to 3 synthetic steps. .The students should initially develop the project in a theoretical way,  present the project to the colleagues in the classroom and only after develop it in the laboratory.

Evaluation method

THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL COMPONENT

2 TEST EACH worth 35%

PRACTICAL COMPONENT

PRACTICAL CLASSES (10% PLANNING) + PRACTICAL EXECUTION (10%) + REPORT AND DISCUSSION (10%) = 30%

A minimum score of 9.5 is required in the theoretical-practical component and in the practical component
