Practical information

Libraries

The NOVA School of Law Library is a freely accessible library whose primary mission is to support teaching and to promote research and relations with society in general. It seeks to encourage the development of research skills in searching, locating, accessing, (critical) evaluation and organization of information by its users.

Regulation

The Library’s Documentary Fund currently comprises some 39200 monographic titles with digital support, and some 255 periodical titles, of which over 153 are foreign publications. Focusing fundamentally on the area of Law, however, works of Philosophy, Political Thought, Sociology, Economics, History, etc. can be found. Reference works (dictionaries and encyclopaedias) are also available for local consultation.

The documentary fund is classified according to specific thematic areas. This classification allows you to understand the arrangement of the publications on the shelves. However, it must be remembered that interdisciplinarity implies a work classified and arranged in a certain area could, in your opinion, be classified differently. It is therefore important to use the automated catalogues and not just browse the shelves. With regard to periodical publications, they are divided into Portuguese and foreign publications. Issues for the current year can be found in the reading room display. Issues from previous years can be found in the periodicals room.

Interchange programs

The "Bolsas Ibero-Americanas para Estudantes de Licenciatura e Mestrado Santander Universidades" programme promoted by the Santander Group with which it aims to strengthen the mobility and exchange of students between Ibero-American universities, a necessary condition to advance towards the construction of an Ibero-American space of socially responsible knowledge. The activity must take place in an Ibero-American university, partner of NOVA, in a country different from the university of origin and the student's place of birth. In the 2019 Call the universities participating in the Programme are Universities of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Uruguay listed in the list of participating universities.

I would also like to inform you that a student who is a SAS scholarship holder, and who does a period of mobility under the Erasmus+ programme, will also have a complementary grant for doing the mobility.

A - Mobility at UNL

Students in the first cycle at NOVA School of Law may attend courses up to 15 credits at another UNL organic unit in replacement of optional courses at NOVA School of Law.

B - International Mobility

Incoming Students - Erasmus students from other universities at NOVA School of Law

1.     Erasmus+ Programme

Allows European students to do an exchange of one semester or one academic year in another European university (as long as it is outside their country of origin), with immediate recognition of the credits, and with the possibility to access a Scholarship from the European Commission. This allows Portuguese students to have a unique experience, outside their home country, and those who stay in Portugal to receive and have contact with students coming from other countries, contributing to the global vision of internationalization of NOVA School of Law.

1.1. Students selected, in their home University, to participate in the Erasmus+ Programme at NOVA School of Law, receive an acceptance email and information about the submission of the online application (Mobilidade Net), and must upload the following documents:

·         Identification Document;

·         Academic transcript of records;

·         Learning Agreement (already signed by the student and the Institutional Coordinator of the home University);

·         EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).

1.2. In cooperation with the Students' Union of NOVA School of Law, the Mobility Office organizes a number of events, in order to help the integration of incoming students in the academic community (Welcome week; Orientation Day...).

1.3. Exchange Students have the possibility to make the Student Card, they are given a student number and an email account, which will allow them to access the reserved area, Moodle platform, Internet and Microsoft Office applications in the user's optics.

1.4. At the end of the mobility period, the Mobility Office signs the student's Certificate of Attendance, document that proves the period that the student was at NOVA School of Law, with the start and end date of the mobility and as soon as the grades are available in the Academic Management System (CSE) the Transcript of Records (signed by the Erasmus Coordinator) is issued and sent by email directly to the home University.

2.    Themis

The purpose of the Network is to promote academic cooperation in the field of international trade law and to encourage the internationalisation of Master's students. It is a programme aimed at Master's students in the areas of Law and Economics, which provides that the first semester (fall/winter semester) is done in one of the partner Universities, and requires the enrolment of at least 30 ECTS credits and the approval of 24 ECTS credits. Besides the fact that students are required to spend a semester abroad, at one of the partner Universities, the students selected to participate in the Programme have to do an International Internship (organised by the student him/herself), and in the 2nd semester (Spring semester) students must participate in the THEMIS Seminar (lasting 3 days), organised by one of the partner Universities.

2.1. Students selected, at their home University, to participate in the Themis Programme at NOVA School of Law, receive an acceptance email and information on the submission of the online application (Mobilidade Net), and must upload the following documents:

·         Identification Document;

·         Academic transcript of records;

·         Learning Agreement (already signed by the student and the Institutional Coordinator of the home University);

·         EHIC (European Health Insurance Card)/copy of the Individual Health Insurance (countries outside Europe).

2.2          In cooperation with the Students' Union of NOVA School of Law, the Mobility Office organizes a number of events, in order to help the integration of incoming students in the academic community (Welcome week; Orientation Day...).

2.3          Exchange Students have the possibility to make the Student Card, they are given a student number and an email account, which will allow them to access the reserved area, Moodle platform, Internet and Microsoft Office applications in the user's optics.

2.4 At the end of the mobility period, the Mobility Office signs the student's Certificate of Attendance, document that proves the period that the student was at NOVA School of Law, with the start and end date of the mobility and as soon as the grades are available in the Academic Management System (CSE) the Transcript of Records (signed by the Institutional Coordinator) is issued and sent by email directly to the home University.

3.    Programa Padre António Vieira

The Padre António Vieira Programme (cooperation programme with Brazil) promotes the mobility of students and teaching staff of NOVA School of Law with Brazilian Law Schools that have signed a cooperation agreement for this purpose, or that are part of Universities connected to Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, through a cooperation framework agreement. Students may apply for an exchange period for one semester or for a full academic year.

3.1. Students selected, at their home University, to participate in the Padre António Veira Programme at NOVA School of Law, receive an acceptance email and information on the submission of the online application (Mobilidade Net), and must upload the following documents:

·         Identification Document;

·         Academic transcript of records;

·         Study Plan (already signed by the student and the Institutional Coordinator from the home University);

·         Copy of PB4/Individual Health Insurance.

3.2 In cooperation with the Students' Union of NOVA School of Law, the Mobility Office organizes a number of events, in order to help the integration of incoming students in the academic community (Welcome week; Orientation Day...).

3.3 Exchange Students have the possibility to make the Student Card, they are given a student number and an email account, which will allow them to access the reserved area, Moodle platform, Internet and Microsoft Office applications in the user's optics.

4. Exchange with the University of Macau

4.1. In 2013, NOVA School of Law signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Macau, with the aim of strengthening ties between West and East, allowing students from both Institutions, through exchange periods, to strengthen cultural ties and expand knowledge and opportunities. The exchange of students under this programme implies the prior agreement of the home institution and the host institution and is aimed for 1st and 2nd cycle students.

4.2. Students selected, at their home University, to participate in the Exchange Programme with the University of Macau at NOVA School of Law, receive an acceptance email and information on the submission of the online application (Mobilidade Net), and must upload the following documents:

·         Identification Document;

·         Academic transcript of records;

·         Study Plan (already signed by the student and by the Institutional Coordinator of the home University);

·         Copy of the Individual Health Insurance.

4.3. In cooperation with the Students' Union of NOVA School of Law, the Mobility Office organizes a number of events, in order to help the integration of incoming students in the academic community (Welcome week; Orientation Day...).

5. European Master's Degree in Human Rights Democratisation (E.MA)

The E.MA has as its fundamental objective to train high level professionals in the field of human rights and democratisation, qualified to work as academics, staff members or field workers for intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organisations. In addition, this Master seeks to create a European network of curriculum development and staff exchanges between Universities in the field of human rights, and has also given rise to a significant group of former students ("Alumni") who maintain and expand contacts and initiatives in this area. Today the several Alumni Associations of the multiple 'regional' Masters are brought together in the Global Campus Alumni (GCA).

Within the E.MA, NOVA School of Law should be available to host up to three students during the 2nd semester of each academic year, giving them the possibility to enrol in subjects taught in English language, for a minimum of 9 ECTS credits, and professors available to supervise their research work for the thesis.

From 2000 to date, NOVA School of Law has received 53 E.MA students whose thesis were prepared in Lisbon and supervised by professors from our Faculty.

The Global Campus of Human Rights (GC), based in Venice, an international network of which NOVA University is part through NOVA School of Law, is composed of a group of European Universities and Universities from all other regions of the world, which provide and carry out research and training in the field of HUMAN RIGHTS (HR). It was formed as an association of the multiple organizations of 'regional' Masters in Human Rights, in an organization that today includes:

·         GC Europe ("GC Europe", Venice, Italy);

·         GC South East Europe (University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina);

·         GC Africa (University of Pretoria, South Africa);

·         Asia-Pacific GC (Mahidol University, Thailand);

·         GC Caucasus (Yerevan University, Armenia);

·         GC Latin America Caribbean (San Martín University, Argentina);

·         GC Arab World (Saint Joseph University, Lebanon)

6. Other UNL Programmes

There are other exchange programmes managed by the Rectorate of Universidade Nova de Lisboa where students can be hosted by the different organic units of NOVA:

·         Pre-University Semester;

·         Santander Portuguese-Brazilian Scholarships;

·         International Credit Mobility (Erasmus+);

·         AULP

Outgoing Students - NOVA School of Law students abroad

·         All students who are duly enrolled at NOVA School of Law in a higher education study programme leading to a degree, in the academic year in which they apply and in the academic year in which they carry out the mobility are eligible. Only 1st cycle students who have completed or obtained the equivalence of a minimum of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) of course units can apply.

The list of Erasmus+ agreements is available in the Faculty's website, as well as all the information about how to apply.

·         The applications for the Themis Programme take place during the last half of February and the students who wish to apply for the remaining mobility programmes can do it during the first half of March, on the website by filling in an application form, here: netpa > login > out. The students should choose, in order of preference, four Universities and the admitted applications will be ranked according to the highest average of all the curricular units already accomplished by the student in the study cycle in which he is enrolled, weighted by ECTS and calculated to hundredths. In case of a tie, preference is given to the candidate who presents the highest number of ECTS credits and of curricular units already completed. Students are placed in existing vacancies in the universities to which they have applied according to the preferential order of options included in their application, followed by the nomination at the chosen university.

·         After the nomination and acceptance by the host University, the documents required to formalize the application are:

a)      Application form from the host University;

b)     A study plan form, containing the courses units to be taken during the  mobility and the courses units that may have equivalence at NOVA School of Law;

c)      Study contract/Learning agreement with a minimum of 20, 30 or 60 ECTS credits, depending on whether the period of mobility is three months, one semester or one academic year, respectively;

d)     Academic records with the information of the number of ECTS credits and course units already completed at NOVA School of Law;

e)     European Health Insurance Card/copy of the individual health insurance.

·         The Erasmus+ programme has a (limited) number of grants available. The number of grants awarded each year to each university body depends on the available European Union budget. Grants are awarded on the basis of the amount allocated to NOVA School of Law and the selection of applicants.. Grants awarded to Erasmus+ and THEMIS students are intended only to contribute to extraordinary expenses arising from mobility and do not cover all the expenses which the student would normally have in their home establishment.

The order in which grants are awarded:

a)      Students benefitting from Social Action Services (SAS);

b)     Students who wish to participate in the Mobility Programme within the THEMIS network;

c)      Other students.

 ·         Documents to issue the Erasmus+ grant contract:

1.        Learning Agreement with the three signatures;

2.       Copy of identification document (Citizen Card, Passport, Residence Permit);

3.       Tax identification number;

4.      IBAN and proof of account ownership (Portuguese account, and proof must be issued by the bank, an ATM receipt is not sufficient for this purpose);

5.       Proxy (draft available at the Faculty's website);

6.      Copy of the proxy holder's identification document (Citizen Card, Passport, Residence Permit).

·         The recognition of credits and grading is carried out by a committee for the appreciation of requests for recognition of courses completed under the mobility programmes composed by three members appointed by the Scientific Council of NOVA School of Law.

·         The curricular units successfully completed by the student at the host university may be recognized (credits and grades) as long as they appear on their Learning Agreement and in the Transcript of Records.

·         Curricular units attended at the host university to which compulsory or restricted subjects at NOVA School of Law correspond can be awarded equivalence provided the curricular unit has the same purpose regardless of the country.

·         Optional choice subjects listed in Table 9 of the first cycle regulations can be freely replaced by subjects offered at the host university.

·         ECTS credits awarded by the host university are granted to the curricular units undertaken at the host university except in the case of equivalence to compulsory subjects and restricted option subjects, which can only be recognized if they fulfil the number of ECTS provided for at NOVA School of Law, with any excess being given as a free option curricular unit.

·         The grades obtained in the Erasmus+ programme are taken into account in the calculation of the average of the course at NOVA School of Law, in accordance with the applicable legal conversion rules.

Curricular units undertaken in mobility with a syllabus similar to those the student has completed at NOVA School of Law cannot be recognized.

·         At the end of the mobility, all participants must provide proof of their mobility as well as its successful completion by means of the Declaration of Stay, Transcript of Records (for study mobility), the final Student Language Proficiency Assessment Test (OLS) and successfully submitting the Final Report to the European Commission's Mobility Tool platform.

Interships

The Institutional Relations and Career Management area is responsible for managing the institutional relations and partnerships of the faculty, monitoring the career goals, promotion, insertion and professional success of its students, as well as strengthening the community of NOVA School of Law through initiatives that bring together current and former students. In this context, it signs partnership agreements with external entities to support its educational project and the employability of its community. Likewise, it develops surveys that make it possible to better adjust its offerings to the interests of each member of the community. It also organizes initiatives for promoting contact between students and employers, such as Career Days, meetings on campus and online. It develops follow-up and counseling actions through periodic meetings with each study cycle and it structures a mentoring network that includes alumni with more experience and other professionals of reference in each sector.

Scholarships

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP:

Candidates whose final classification for admission to a 2nd study cycle at NOVA School of Law, as assessed and ranked by a jury, is equal to or higher than 17 (on a scale of 0/20) and who enrol and attend the same course, will be awarded a prize in cash corresponding to 50% of the tuition fee they will pay for the course phase of the Master's degree. Candidates whose final classification for admission to a 2nd study cycle at NOVA School of Law, as assessed and ranked by a jury, is equal to or higher than 16 (on a scale of 0/20) and who enrol and attend the same course, will be awarded a prize in cash corresponding to 30% of the tuition fee they will pay for the taught phase of the Master's degree.

In the non-teaching phase, three academic merit awards are given (according to master's degree or area of specialisation, in the case of the Master's in Law). These awards presuppose the completion of the taught phase within the regular timeframe.  The best student of the taught phase of each study cycle or specialisation area of a study cycle who continues and attends the non-teaching phase is awarded a prize in cash corresponding to 100% of the tuition fee they will pay for the non-teaching phase of the Master's degree. The second best student of the academic phase of each study cycle or specialisation area of a study cycle who continues and attends the non-teaching phase will receive a prize in cash corresponding to 60% of the tuition fee they have to pay, corresponding to the non-teaching phase of the Master's degree. The third best student of each study cycle or specialisation area of a study cycle who continues and attends the non-teaching phase will receive a prize in cash corresponding to 40% of the tuition fee paid for the non-teaching phase of the Master's degree.

FINANCIAL DISCOUNT:  Students who choose to pay tuition fees in a single initial payment receive a 5% discount on the amount to be paid.

PHD MERIT SCHOLARSHIP:

Candidates whose final classification for entry to a 3rd study cycle at NOVA School of Law, according to assessment and ranking by the respective jury, is equal to or higher than 70 (on a scale of 0/100) and who enrol and attend this study cycle at NOVA School of Law, will be awarded a prize in cash of an amount corresponding to 50% of the tuition fee they will pay for the academic phase of the Doctorate.

In the non-teaching phase of the doctorate, three academic merit awards are given each academic year to students at NOVA School of Law:

- The best student of the academic phase of a 3rd study cycle who continues and attends the non-academic phase will be awarded a prize in cash corresponding to 100% of the tuition fee they will pay for the non-academic phase of the PhD, if their average is equal to or higher than 18 (on a 0/20 scale).

- The second best student of the academic phase of a 3rd study cycle who continues and attends the non-academic phase, or the two best, if the first does not reach an average equal to or higher than 18, is awarded a prize in cash corresponding to 60% of the tuition fee they will pay, corresponding to the non-academic phase of the PhD.

- The third best student of the school phase of a 3rd study cycle who continues and attends the non-school phase is awarded a prize in cash corresponding to 40% of the tuition fee they will pay for the non-school phase of the PhD.

Only the marks obtained at NOVA School of Law will be taken into account to determine the best marks in the taught phase.

In the case of a tie, the tie-breaker will be determined by the average marks awarded in the compulsory course units of the taught phase of the PhD.

Only students who complete the academic phase in due time, whether they attend it full-time or part-time, are eligible for these academic merit awards.

 FCT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES

The Foundation for Science and Technology launches an annual call for doctoral research grants. The call supports researchers in any area of knowledge, who intend to develop research activities leading to a doctoral degree.

Food services

NOVA School of Law students are granted access to all SAS catering units, the closest ones being located in Professor Alfredo de Sousa Halls of Residence (canteen, bar and esplanade). They provide bar services from 8am to 9pm, lunch from 11.30am to 2.30pm, and dinners from 6.30pm to 9:30 pm.

NOVA School of Law students are  garanted access to all other SAS food units, namely: Faculty of Social and Human Sciences - Av. De Berna, 24, comprising a bar, snack bar and cafeteria, with continuous service from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm; Faculty of Medical Sciences - Campo Mártires da Pátria, 130, comprising a bar and cafeteria with service from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

They can also have access to all the food units of public universities in public higher education establishments in Lisbon.

Special needs facilities

Special needs facilities

NOVA School of Law offers parking spaces reserved for students/teachers with special needs, such as access ramps to buildings and elevators. It also has toilets for students / teachers with special needs.

Extracurricular activities

Studying at NOVA School of Law is an enriching experience that goes well beyond the classroom.

NOVA School of Law is concerned with reinforcing the idea of ​​the academic community, estimating that the professional vocation of the university teaching of Law must develop in balance with the other essential functions, cultural and scientific. From a pedagogical point of view, NOVA School of Law will try to maintain high standards of merit and evaluation.

You will be able to participate in various groups and student initiatives that will contribute to your training and achievement as a student, person and citizen of a globalized world, such as the rhetoric group (a space that contributed to the promotion of the art of speaking well), JURISTUNA, JUR.NAL (autonomous nucleus of the New School of Law of writing and comfortable distraction editing); International Students Nucleus (its main objective is to promote the interculturality of NOVA School of Law students and foster an integrative academic experience at all levels of a university student's life); Futsal, Volleyball, (poetry sessions, theatrical techniques, SPEEDS (seminar on scientific research and development of postgraduate education), among others.

Student association

  Nova Law SU is the association of all students of NOVA School of Law. Created at the birth of the college itself, Nova Law SU has always energized the student community, whether it be to represent their interests and aspirations with the bodies from the Faculty and NOVA University, wants to provide all students with an enriching and diverse experience as NOVA Students. 

    Nova Law SU stands out for offering its members renowned training opportunities in the field of Law (with specialized courses and training, study aids, support, etc.) or with extracurricular activities in the areas of sport, culture and intervention civic. 

ALUMNI is the Association of Former Students of NOVA Law School of Law, formed in 2004 by students graduated in the first course of the Faculty.

Through ALUMNI the former students of NOVA Law School of Law seek to consolidate and strengthen the ties that bind them to the Faculty, to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences among those who learned Law at NOVA and to promote actions that give prestige to NOVA Law School of Law.

Other information

CEDIS

CEDIS is one of the first Portuguese Research Units in the field of Law, the creation of which relates to the foundation of NOVA School of Law of NOVA University, Lisbon.

With a plural vision of law in contemporary society, an interdisciplinary and innovative approach to legal research, an international working network with European and Portuguese-speaking countries, researchers with diversified backgrounds and an open access orientation, CEDIS, was created to be a Research Centre on Law and Society, reflecting NOVA School of Law's approach to legal studies.

The research that CEDIS is currently conducting pertains to the following areas of Law and Society: Criminal Law, Equality Law, Law and History, Law and Politics, Law and Religion, Law and Security, Intercultural Law and Lusophony, Private Law, Procedural Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution, Transitional Justice, and Tax and Social Security Law.

The mission of CEDIS is to promote quality and innovation in the teaching of law and research in the field of social and legal studies, to enrich and update the library of NOVA School of Law, to provide the community with free access to legal documents and to support the creation and development of interfaces between research activities and community services.

To fulfil its mission, CEDIS develops its activities with the following objectives:

a) The study of Law in its relations with society, promoting a multidisciplinary awareness of Law and Society through the integration of legal and non-legal approaches to research and through openness to legal analysis methodologies developed by, or designed in collaboration with other fields of knowledge, with emphasis on our sister social sciences, including economics;

b) The study of new or emerging legal realities, such as transnational legal phenomena, alternative forms of dispute resolution, or new issues in the regulation of intellectual property and competition law;

c) Bringing the study of the practical application of law to the fore;

d) Supporting the implementation of a new academic and didactic model based on two-way communication and student participation in research activities;

e) Supporting projects aimed at providing services to the community;

f) Increasing the international projection of Portuguese legal studies.

Within the scope of its mission, CEDIS seeks to intensify the articulation between teaching and research through the involvement of graduate and post-graduate students in its research teams, especially those students attending PhD programmes in Law and Law & Security.

Knowledge Centres at NOVA School of Law

The Knowledge Centres at NOVA School of Law form an innovative network of researchers who privilege teamwork and partnerships with relevant community agents, to develop scientific research in the various areas of Law and to encourage debate.

This is achieved through multidisciplinary teams with the support of teaching staff who are highly specialised in their research areas and students from the various teaching cycles, promoting team spirit, mutual help and shared growth, which strengthens the individual qualities of each participant, allowing them to explore their interests and to make a contribution to society.

The following knowledge centers stand out:

- ANTÍGONA - Clinic For Equality and Discrimination Law The aim of the Clinic is to develop activities related to the promotion of legal counselling, training and research in the areas of Equality and Discrimination Law. Characterised by its openness to the non-academic community, the Clinic aims to create the conditions for legal counselling and for the preparation of opinions and studies in the various areas regulated by this branch of the Law, to contribute to specialised training in these areas and to promote and participate in discussion on the evolution of the rules covered by it.

Composed of qualified jurists, the Clinic creates a space for wide-ranging discussion, including academics, legal professionals, leaders of public institutions, representatives of non-governmental organisations, on current problems arising in these areas. - NOVA Compliance Lab. - The mission of this Centre is the development of knowledge to better diagnose institutional and operational failures that promote corruption and other unwanted conduct, together with the analysis of effective measures for their prevention. Taking advantage of the experience of almost two decades of NOVA School of Law in the monitoring and resolution of consumer disputes, in UMAC - Unit of Mediation and Monitoring of Consumer Conflicts (which the NOVA Consumer Lab succeeds), the NOVA Consumer Lab maintains a clear commitment to the relationship between the practical and theoretical components, opening the School to the community through the course of its activities.

The objective is to create a centre through which a number of activities may be developed: information, training, research, studies and reports, dispute resolution, magazine and other editorial activities, internships, digital content, support to consumers, companies and other entities.

- The NOVA Dispute Resolution Forum is a knowledge Centre dedicated to research and training in the field of dispute resolution. It aims to bring to the debate various topics of Civil Procedural Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution, in an integrated vision of civil dispute resolution. - Observatory of Portuguese Legislation was born with the aim of carrying out quantified analysis of various aspects of legislation, which gave rise in July 2007 to the annual publication of the "Bulletin of the Observatory of Portuguese Legislation". The construction of a relational database is under development, which will allow access to the «life» of an act of legislation - from its adoption to its relationship with other acts of legislation, and its termination.

The Observatory for the Protection of Personal Data (PPD) was set up on the basis of the reform initiated by the European Commission on the protection of personal data, with the aim of updating and modernizing the rules laid down not only on the protection of personal data but also on police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters.

- The Space Law Research Centre (SPARC) is the first and until now, only research group in Space Law in Portugal, created in 2018 within CEDIS, the research institute of NOVA School of Law. It aims to investigate and promote awareness of topics related to Space Law.

SLRC is a research group in Space Law and related subjects, which brings together professors, researchers and PhD students with expertise and projects in this area, giving precedence to interdisciplinarity.

- The Criminalia Centre develops research on criminal matters. SPEED (PERMANENT SEMINAR ON THE STATE AND STUDY OF LAW)

SPEED, as it has become known, is a scientific research and post-graduate teaching development seminar that NOVA School of Law has been developing since 1999, with the aim of bringing together the scientific community around issues relevant to Law and Society, taking a critical and innovative stance.

- WhatNext.Law, a research centre created in 2021 by NOVA School of Law and Vieira de Almeida, aims to shape discussion and research, develop skills and disseminate knowledge about current and future challenges of law, the economy and society. It focuses, among others, on the legal challenges of emerging technologies, the environment and sustainability, mobility, automation, the digital economy, space, biotechnology, and smart cities.

The aim is to anticipate legal trends, new and emerging challenges, and to help shape the legal solutions that will support societies of the future, combining the powerful knowledge of experienced professors and researchers with the insight of leading lawyers and practitioners from different industries

Almeida Garrett Programme 

The Almeida Garrett Programme is a national mobility programme, in which NOVA School of Law participates. It seeks to promote quality and to strengthen the national dimension of Faculties in our country, aiming to encourage national cooperation between Higher Education Institutions in order to strengthen personal fulfilment, social cohesion and the spirit of citizenship of our students, promoting creativity, competitiveness and consequently employability.

By applying for this type of mobility, students can spend a period of study at a Portuguese host University, with full academic recognition, thus contributing to their personal and professional development, stimulating their interests, acquiring knowledge and living a true exchange of experiences and knowledge.

All students who are regularly enrolled and registered in a higher education institution with a seat on the Council of Deans of Portuguese universities are eligible for the Almeida Garrett Programme.

The period of studies in a different institution can be for one semester, which must begin in the 2nd year for 1st cycle courses. The period of studies in a different institution can be one semester, which must begin in the 2nd year of the 1st cycle courses, provided the student already has at least 60 ECTS. In the event that the student wishes to extend the mobility period for another semester, the case will be analysed on a case-by-case basis and authorisation from the institutions involved must be obtained. In the 2nd cycle, mobility can only occur from the 2nd semester of the 1st year, and with an exclusive duration of one semester. Students may only carry out a single period of mobility, at national universities, within the same course.

Freemover Programme:

Higher Education students, enrolled in foreign universities, can attend a semester or academic year at Nova School of Law, outside the framework of mobility programs, as independent students (freemovers), being able to choose from a wide range of subjects taught in English, in each of the semesters. Students must prove that they are officially enrolled at a foreign higher education institution, and can apply independently, even if their home university does not have an agreement with Nova School of Law.

They can take up to 30 ECTS per semester and 60 ECTS per year, and are responsible for everything related to their exchange (visas, accommodation, travel expenses, food and academic material); they have to pay a tuition fee for the semester they intend to attend at Nova School of Law.

Freemover students are not enrolled as regular students at Nova School of Law and cannot receive a degree from this university.
