Doctorate in Tropical Medicine
Education objectives
The Doctoral Program in Tropical Medicine IHMT aims to provide students with:
- depth knowledge and broad understanding of key global health issues in regions of limited resources and their possible solutions, an interdisciplinary perspective;
- ability to elaborate understanding of the causation, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, complications, epidemiology, management and control of major tropical diseases, integrating these in-depth scientific and technical knowledge;
- aptitude for understanding health and disease in the multidimensional perspective, physical, psychological and social;
- current understanding of the nature of medicine, which requires health management together with the management of the disease and thus the understanding of the importance of disease prevention and health promotion;
- knowledge and skills in research methods applied to the global analysis of health problems, including qualitative and quantitative research methods;
- ability to plan, execute, interpret and evaluate experimental studies in tropical medicine;
- ability to understand and apply epidemiological principles, including the selection of appropriate studies drawings and the application and interpretation of advanced statistical tests;
- aptitude for understanding the relationship between the basic sciences and clinical practice and public health, in the current perspective advanced medicine based on science and translational medicine, in the particular case of tropical medicine;
- critical evaluation capacity of the evidence on global health and biomedical research in tropical medicine, especially the published literature;
- critical capacity of socio-ecological health promotion foundations, as well as experience in decision based on ethics;
- aptitude for teaching, assessment and guidance of undergraduate, master's and doctorate, in this case after post-doctoral experience;
- verbal communication skills and concepts of scientific results;
- written communication skills as required in various professional duties, including preparation of manuscripts for scientific publication, revision or dissemination, preparation of projects for research funding and respective reports, development of introductory and advanced courses in subjects of their specialty;
- development of scientific maturity to evaluate the pair work in areas like;
- general and transversal skills, including: ability to learn throughout life; recognition of the importance of ongoing self-assessment, development of training actions for citizenship, the field of information technologies, language skills, recognition of the importance of teamwork for the proper treatment of the patient and other case studies.

Degree pre-requisites
Duration: 7 academic semesters, from the 2nd to the 7th semester corresponds to the preparation of the Thesis.
Total credits: 210 ECTS for the achieve the Doctoratedegree (30 in curricular units + 180 in the preparation of the Thesis).
Conditions of admittance
Graduates in Medicine, if pre-Bologna, with a master's degree in Medicine if they have an integrated master's degree or any of the aforementioned degrees taken abroad.

Each curricular unit (CU) is evaluated according to the criteria established by the Teacher in charge, which are available in the section "Evaluation method" in the "General characterization" tab of each CU.
The academic degree of the Doctorateis given a final classification in the range of 10-20 of the entire numerical scale from 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent in the European scale of comparability of classifications. The calculation of the final classification is obtained by weighted arithmetic average by the number of credits.
