Communication and Intercultural reflection in context

Objectives

This curricular unit is aimed at deepening and exploring skills and knowledge that will allow a better cultural adaptation of the student to the portuguese cultural context as well as the recognition of their own cultural background. Students are expected to become familiar with intercultural studies theories and contributions empowering them to use these learnings on their everyday life. These skills and experiences will be acquired both in class and outdoors and it should motivate a constant individual and group reflection of these reports and results.

Teaching method

Due to the highly applied part of this curricular unit,  students’ active participation is of utmost importance. Please note that students will not being evaluated on the degree to which they progress interculturally, but rather on how well they articulate and apply the concepts and skills being taught in the course.

1.Definition of the concepts cultural identity, cultural literacy, culture, and intercultural communication.
2.Models of cultural dimensions (G. Hofstede, E. Hall, T. Fang).
3.Case studies of international negotiation.
4.Competencies for literature search and construction of case studies.
5.Written and oral communication in a multicultural workplace.
6. Websites and advertisement as cases of intercultural communication.
