Translational and Clinical Oncology
Objectives
With the clinical oncology module we aim to give the view of cancer as a disease, differently from the module of basic oncobiology; Students will only have classes given by MD PhDs or MD PhD students that are practicing clinicians that perform patient oriented research (POR); Students will learn diagnosis, clinical characteristics, therapy and management aspects for the most frequent tumor types; Understanding the most frequent tumor types & the unmet medical needs in oncology POR research; Initiation of the students in the practice of translational & clinical research in oncology;- Acquisition of theoretical knowledge of the basic tumor types; Evaluation of data and compilation of clinical analysis with scientific rigor; Acquisition of skills in scientific communication.

Lectures - theoretical approach to the subjects
Practical Lectures - presentation of journal clubs developed by students in the UC.
Evaluation method
- Presentation and Discussion (40%);
- Written examination (60%).
Subject matter
- Cancer as a disease in the clinical, therapeutic and societal perspective;
- The big 4 carcinomas: colon, prostate, breast and lung;
- The other relevant neoplasias: head & neck, upper digestive carcinomas (esophagus, gastric & pancreatic), gynecology (ovary, endometrium and cervix), genitourinary (kidney & bladder), hematology, neuro oncology, melanoma);
- Psychooncology;
- Familial cancer & understand genetic risk;
- Translating the knowledge of molecular alterations into diagnosis, therapy in cancer;
- Clinical trials;
- Rational drug development, drug approval, cost;
- Legal & ethical aspects of POR research;
- Journal Club presentations;
- Preparation of scientific communications, oral and paper;
- National and foreign translational & clinical researchers of recognized merit in the respective scientific areas should be invited to minister lectures and seminars.
