Art and Public Space

Objectives

The role of intervention experiences in the public space has gained relevance in the contemporary world and its importance and relevance in the social context and cultural studies, implies an approach to the specificity of its fields of study and its professional practices. This curricular unit intends to revisit modern and contemporary intervention practices through the concept of creation in the public and community sphere. After completing this course, students should: - Understand the nature of intervention in the public and community spheres in the arts; - Develop the ability to interpret and reflect on these intervention practices, from a historical and theoretical perspective; - Know how to distinguish the main intervention models and develop an informed and critical posture on contemporary research topics and lines.

Teaching method

The methodology used in each class is structured as follows: (1) the lesson begins with the explanation of the objective to be achieved and (2) a brief introduction to the theme is supported, based on the existing theory (3). a simulation in which the students interact with each other, and (4) a broad discussion follows to define and clarify the underlying principles, (5) a synthesis of the key points of the lesson is finally made.

Evaluation method

Método de avaliação - Class participation, through the planned presentation of texts by the students and their discussion(25%), Written paper(50%), Written review of the text presented and discussed orally(25%)

2. Spaces and forms of production in the public sphere Analysis of historical background and new forms of public intervention in artistic activities in the sphere of the informal economy: transformations, ruptures, resistances and continuities throughout the 20th and 21st centuries.
3. Collectives, creation and modes of collaborative production in the arts Approach to emerging models and recent experiences of public collaboration and creation of shared identities in the arts.
4. Contexts of community intervention, participation, dialogue and social action Practices carried out in / with specific communities that establish collective forms of work and that involve the active participation of the public.
5. The relational and participation This module focuses on the artistic forms that use relational strategies, involving the direct participation of the public or specific populations in its production process.
