Media Discourse
Objectives
a) Mastering the analytical categories of Discourse, Mediation and Experience
b) Acquiring ability to decode the different coordinates and strategies guiding the discoursing production of the Media.
Deductive agility enabling the student to go beyond the obvious techniques of discoursive construction of messages which contemporary media activate, and also penetrate in the subjectivity and power effects which are played in the mediatic arena.
c) Acquiring the ability to decode all forms of mediation in modern experience: from a simple ornament to the macro television phenomenon, from videogames to Internet and its devices, for example.
d) Drafting of critical essays on the different discoursive forms of contemporary media.
e) Acquiring analytical skills which predispose to critical and creative professional intervention in the Media fields.

Teaching method
Oral exposition of the syllabus (70%), supported by critical readings of excerpts from the bibliography. Video projection of film excerpts, television programmes, advertisements, video clips, photographs, paintings, magazines and newspapers. Joint discussion (30%) after showing these examples of modern media production.

2. Introduction to the concept of mediology from Regis Debray
3 The effects of discoursivisation in the Media.
3.1 Modern narrativisation
4. The mediatic experience
4.1 Concrete experience vs. virtual experience: the otaku phenomenon.
4.2 Media and subjectivity. Salvoj Zizek’s concept of interpassivity
4.3 Composition categories of the media discourse: violence, power, commentary, representation and irony.
5. Analysis of examples and cases of modern media discourses:
- Newspaper headlines, publicity and social responsibility of advertisements; mediation through Youtube videos, television reportages and news.
