Translation Practice: Social and Human Sciences (Portuguese to Spanish)

Objectives

a) To acquire Portuguese to Spanish language translation skills in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities, in a comparative perspective;
b) To develop linguistic proficiency in written Spanish, correcting and avoiding most common mistakes in Spanish as a Second Language;
c) To analyze the specific characteristics of various texts;
d) To develop analytical skills and flexibility;
e) To learn and employ a variety of means of research to optimize translation practice.

Teaching method

Analysing and translating texts from Portuguese to Spanish. Correcting texts translated by fellow students. Systematizing of translation knowledge in general and of human sciences knowledge in particular. Creating conceptually organized glossaries. Searching for examples of similar translations. Evaluation tests and their correction. Reflection on translation processes and strategies.

 

Evaluation method

Evaluation Methodologies - Cumulative work effort (developed throughout the semester) on comparative grammar and on both Portuguese and Spanish culture(30%), Three individual translation written tests, face-to-face and/or online (15%, 15%, and 40%)(70%)

Subject matter

a) Introducing to specificities of translation from Portuguese to Spanish (social sciences and humanities), in a comparative perspective. 
b) Focusing on primarial and secondary translation problems, regarding a Portuguese and Spanish comparative approach of texts from: History, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, Linguistics, Media Studies, Political Science, History of Art, Music, Education.
c) To learn most common Spanish syntax and phraseology, as well as specific  terminology and "false friends".
d) Translation errors analysis.                
e) Developing adequate working habits and methods in order to translate (finding sources and searching tools, corpora, glossaries, specific dictionaries, Spanish similar texts).
