Portuguese Literature in the 17th and 18th Centuries
Objectives
a) To focus and question the poetic and rhetoric theorization produced in the XVII and XVIII centuries.
b) To develop critical enquiries concerning the lyrical works composed in the light of the contemporary aesthetic paradigms.
c) To criticize, from the thematic and formal points of view, the dramatic productions of the periods in reference.
d) To plan, develop and discuss essays about lyrical and dramatic works of the Portuguese Baroque and Neoclassicism, resorting to the adequate methodological and theoretical instruments.

Teaching method
The methodology will be theoretical and practical: it will demand the presentation of arguments and critical analysis in what concerns the students. The professor will lecture on theoretical issues and accompany the works developed by the students.
Evaluation method
Continuous Assessment - Final frequency (60%), Class participation(10%), Presentation and the discussion of the essay writing(30%)
Subject matter
1. Critical reflection about the journeys of the epochal theorization:
1.1. the consecration of "ingenious speech" (Francisco Leitão Ferreira, Nova Arte de Conceitos, 1718-1721);
1.2. the apology of the rationality aesthetics and the definition of the "good taste", authored by the Arcádia Lusitana;
1.3. Baroque resurgences against the Arcadias' severity (Francisco de Pina e Melo, Arte Poética, 1765).
2. Thematic and formal perspectives of lyrical itineraries:
2.1. from the playful and spectacular composition of the baroque writers,
2.2. to the creative search for equilibrium and utility by the authors of the Arcádia Lusitana.
3. Thematic and formal perspectives of theatrical itineraries:
3.1. from the baroque output beyond O Fidalgo Aprendiz (the works of Pedro Salgado, Soror Ângela de Azevedo and Soror Maria do Céu, representative of an important dramatic assembly);
3.2. to the elaboration of the civic tragedy and of the bourgeois comedy, in the second half.
