19th Century Portuguese Culture
Objectives
1. Making students acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the historical and cultural context of the 19th century Europe, over a period that was very fertile in political revolutions and social transformations. 2. Conveying a set of fundamental knowledge in Portuguese culture in the 19th century, in such areas as literature, arts, politics or science. 3. Developing a reflection on how the various ideological movements contributed to a profound social change through a liberal regime, a romantic thought and secularism. 4. Developing skills in reading 19th century texts, that are presented throughout the semester in a chronological sequence, and in interpreting them as far as theme and conjuncture are concerned. 5. Motivating students to approach the proposed syllabus and to identify the content of the analyzed texts.

Teaching method
Teaching and evaluation methodologies: (1000 characters) Throughout the semester, as far as the teaching methodologies are concerned, it is intended to develop the skills and research practices of students around nineteenth-century Portuguese culture. For this, students are encouraged to participate in classes, as well as to read and interpret texts with nineteenth-century orthography. As a complement to aid in understanding all the elements of the syllabus, there is a balanced use of resources in visual support (painting and photography).
