Theory and Method in Music Sciences
Objectives
1. Give the student a general overview of the formation and transformation of Musical Sciences as a discipline, especially in its historical and anthropological aspects, both internationally and in Portugal;
2. Familiarize you with the major contemporary theoretical trends in the field of Musical Sciences;
3. Provide you with conceptual and methodological tools, as well as develop critical skills in the fields of Historical Musicology and Ethnomusicology;
4. Introduce you to general notions of research methodologies in the areas of Historical Musicology and Ethnomusicology.

Evaluation method
Individual assessment - The evaluation process will be based on a written test, to be carried out in the first module of the course, and a set of elements to be defined by each of the teachers in the second module. Class participation will also be counted.(100%)
Subject matter
1. Musicology and Musical Arts as academic disciplines and research areas. Paths and challenges of today.
2.1 The Historical Musicology from the late nineteenth century to the present. A wide field of interests and a corresponding variety of methodological approaches. The major trends of today. Perspectives on research in Portugal.
2.2 The development of Ethnomusicology and the main theoretical and methodological issues of the present. Contemporary issues and their approaches within the discipline. The theory and practice of musical ethnography, research methods and field research techniques.
2.3 Research methodologies in Musical Arts: Transversality and complexity of research through practice; the documentation of the creative act and performance as bases for MA research; The artistic creation as research: Recover, restore, document, experiment.
3. Problems of writing and editing academic papers.
