Traditional Literature Studies
Objectives
a) To review the distinctive concept of traditional literature (traditionality).
b) To examine traditional literature based on the genre of the Pan-Hispanic ballad (origins, cosmopolitanism, persistence and variability).
c) To question the limits of the knowledge of the Pan-Hispanic ballad old tradition.
d) To apply the theoretical and methodological devices appropriate to the approach of the ancient tradition of the PanHispanic ballad.
e) To evaluate the Portuguese contributions to the Pan-Hispanic traditional corpus.
f) To promote skills for autonomous research in the field of traditional literature.

Teaching method
The teaching method is based on expository classes dedicated to the fundamental studies of this field of study and on student participation encouraged by the proposal of individual research work.
Evaluation method
Continuous Assessment - Oral and written presentation of a study of about 10 to 15 pages(60%), Participation in the seminars(40%)
Subject matter
1. The debates about the concept of traditionality.
2. The Pan-Hispanic ballad: genesis, history and diversity. a) The complexity of its origins; b) the persistence of the genre in the time and geography of peninsular languages; c) the thematic heterogeneity and the variation of PanHispanic ballads.
3. The ancient Pan-Hispanic ballad: a) limits and possibilities of the knowledge of the corpus; b) narrative and versification; c) language, poetics and rhetoric.
4. Testimonies of Portuguese authors (15th-17th centuries): a) the review of Romances Velhos em Portugal (relitrom.pt); b) approaches to the memorial and material repertoire; c) two traditionalized poems by Portuguese authors; d) two nationally themed ballads.
