Journalistic Investigation: audio challenges

Objectives

-Understanding the hallmarks of investigative journalism; -This seminar focuses on the specificities of journalistic investigation associated with the complexity of audio platforms. -Knowing how to overcome such pressures/stresses -Profiling the investigative journalist - Identifying and characterizing audio solutions that commit audio platforms with the journalistic investigation; - Structuring and building, while in the field, a journalistic investigation report with a strong audio component by applying the knowledge acquired during the semester.

Teaching method

The first few lessons are entirely devoted to the presentation and discussion of concepts, using the expositive method. The teacher does, however, use some materials (such as audio investigative journalistic reports) to demonstrate the validity of the concepts presented. In the second phase, students are challenged to apply acquired knowledge in the critical analysis of audio investigative journalistic reports. The final works are done in group following the guiding principles of collaborative journalism.

Evaluation method

Método de Avaliação - Final work - 70% (includes essay (20%), monitoring presentations (15%) and investigative report (35%)). (70%), Work done throughout the semester - 30% - includes participation and attendance;(30%)

Subject matter

1-The impact of journalism's sustainability crisis on investigative journalism. Digital revolution and the subprime crisis. 2-Investigative journalism’s hallmarks: access journalism/accountability journalism and the pitfalls of official journalism; 3-Investigative Journalism: method – articulating the journalist and the academic; 4-The discussion of alternative organizational solutions (collaborative journalism) that can protect investigative journalism; 5-The pressures associated with journalistic investigation: the Watergate case and the resistance to pressure; 6-The investigative journalist’s profile: character, persistence, resilience, and subversion; 7-The social and financial profit of investigative journalism: credibility generates revenue; 8-Investigative journalism on audio platforms - Identifying and characterizing audio solutions that commit audio platforms with the journalistic investigation; Pág. 8 9-Journalistic capturing and editing of audio.
