Journalistic Writing

Objectives

In this course, students will contact several journalistic genres (news, features, profiles and columns) and will be able, at the end, to produce high quality journalism works to be published in national newspapers or magazines.
In this course, it is expected that students:
1) understand and apprehend the differences between journalism genres;
2) will be able to adequately gather information in order to prepare and write a journalistic text;
3) contact, through actual cases, the ethical rules of the journalistic profession;
4) frequently produce high quality journalistic texts.

Teaching method

Classes include theoretical lectures, practical analysis of case-studies and collective discussion of the students´ texts.

Evaluation method

Método de Avaliação - - One column – 10 % - Participation in class – 10 %(20%), - One profile (20%), - Two news stories – 15 %- Two feature articles – 45 %(60%)

Subject matter

The syllabus of this course will cover: a) the analysis of the characteristics of journalism writing; b) the analysis of different journalism genres; c) the study of the newsgathering procedures and validation of journalistic information; d) the production of journalistic texts, in order to be published on a seminar website or in a national Portuguese newspaper or magazine.
