Images of Women in Contemporary Art
Objectives
1. Acquire skills of observation, reflection and analysis of gender issues in the arts, stimulating the awareness of the importance of new research trends in this field. 2. Acquire ability to analyze models of expression and representation of gender differences in various art forms. 3. Acquire ability to problematize the image of women in art as representation of alterity and as a discourse of difference. 4. Acquire ability to reflect on the relationship between gender studies, feminist theory and modern and postmodern thought, highlighting the intersections of theoretical frameworks. 5. Acquire ability to address the various levels of complexity of interdisciplinary and intertextual artistic phenomena that reveal gender paradigms in music, theater, the visual arts, cinema and more recent pluriartistic forms. 6. Acquire ability to carry out research work on this subject.

Teaching method
Classes are structured according to three types of sessions: a) oral presentation by the lecturer covering the different points in the syllabus, with use of powerpoint, audio and video b) invited experts, or visits to exhibitions / shows on relevant subjects for the development of specific skills and assignments c) final collective discussion of the individual students' work. The subject of the individual assignment is prearranged with the lecturer, to be considered a small essay to be used further on in the master's final assignment.
Evaluation method
Método de avaliação - The assessment is done through participation and class discussions(20%), and written work, to be delivered according to established schedule (maximum 4000 words, excluding annexes and bibliography)(80%)
Subject matter
1. Introduction to gender studies in Art. 2. Analysis of dichotomies and aesthetic boundaries based on gender: sensitivity and reason, nature and culture. 3. Art, dynamics of creation and the female condition. 4. Foundations of Contemporary Art (confrontations and alliances between eighteenth and nineteenth-century codes and languages) - construction of the female gender in different artistic modes. 5. Aesthetic, philosophical and sociological aspects of the female presence in fin-de-siècle Art - creation, interpretation and reception structures. 6. Questions of identity of the female character and of the concept of gender in art over the 20th and 21st centuries.
