Teaching Spanish Methodology

Objectives

a) To acquire concepts and terminology central to teaching-and-learning SFL: characterizing and assessing
different methods and approaches.
b) To reflect on which abilities should conform a FL teaching-carrier.
c) To build up proposals to develop productive and receptive skills.
d) To develop further the task-based approach.
e) To develop further the error concept and its meaning in the communicative approach.
f) To know theories and rationales guiding assesment and evaluation and to develop testing instruments and
techniques.
g) To develop the concept of critical and constructive classroom observation and its advantages.
h) To reflect, analyse and discuss processes in the classroom using principles and knowledge from
methodology classes.
i) To reflect on use and didactic possibilities of ICTs in the classroom
j) To increase awareness of Hispanic linguistic and cultural diversity
k) To develop a critical understanding of foreign language education and intercultural communication

Teaching method

Classwork is both theoretical and practical and includes exposition, demonstration, joint discussion and
reflection on the course units´ topics and contents. Active student participation, both individually and in
groups, will be privileged. The modules that compose each course unit will be offered in the form of b-learning,
with limited classroom-based sessions scheduled at the opening of the course and online work to be carried
via e-learning platform.
Objectives, programmatic contents, resources and activities, as well as the assessment schedule, is stated in
the Research Learning Contract posted on the platform. The teaching work to be carried out will focus on the
practical implementation of the approaches, principles and concepts under consideration, facilitating the
learning process through observation and reflection.

Evaluation method

Evaluation Method - Assessment is based on the frequency and quality of participation in classroom sessions, online forum discussions and on individually submitted written works. (100%)

a) Language and central concepts underlying TSFL: Theories, methodologies and approaches to teaching SFL.
b) Learner motivation, differences between learners and different learning contexts.
c) Receptive and productive skills.
d) Task-based approach to TSFL.
e) The role of error in a pedagogical perspective and principles of error production and correction in a
communicative approach.
f) Critical analysis of different ways of evaluating.
g) Observation tasks and techniques.
h) Planning and classroom management.
i) Critical analysis of examples of teaching practice.
j) Critical analysis of textbook suggestions to deal with language-and-culture.
