Discoveries and Globalisation

Objectives

a) Understand the importance of Portuguese expansion in the overall process of globalization of human societies, implemented since the fifteenth century.
b) Ability to analyze and compare the various impacts of the Portuguese Expansion in several spatial and temporal dimensions.
c) Know the specialized literature on the subject and be able to find, identify and analyze appropriate sources.
d) Develop the capacity of oral and writing of research results, making it in a critical and original perspective.
e) Acquire knowledge to enable students to pursue in depth studies of the Portuguese Expansion in the context of global cultural history.

Teaching method

The course will be taught in a face-to-face basis, with theoretical expositive teaching in class on the various themes, but also including interaction between students and between student and teacher. Will be made use of updated bibliography, newspaper news, podcasts and different resources available online; will be made an exposure to the different types of historical sources (including visual and material sources) and critical approach to them. Written work, oral presentation and discussion in class will be carried out. Researchers will also be invited to present specific themes and research projects. The link between theoretical learning and scientific research will also be present in the course.

Objectives


To understand the importance of the Portuguese Expansion (and other European expansions) in the general process of the 'decompartmentalization' of human societies, from the 15th century onwards.
Capacity to analyse and relate the various impacts of the Portuguese Expansion in several spatial-temporal, social, artistic-cultural and ecological dimensions
Knowing the specialised bibliography on the topic and being able to search for, identify and analyse suitable sources.
Develops the ability to present the results of the research orally and in writing, doing so in a critical and original perspective.
Acquire knowledge that will enable the student to pursue further studies on Portuguese Expansion in the context of global cultural history.
