Specialized Topics in Musicology
Objectives
The goal of the present course is:
a) help doctoral students insert musical practices and representations in Portugal into the historical contexts in which they were produced;
b) acquaint the students with the main trends of historiography throughout History and with the latter's incidence inthe origins and development of Historical Musicology as a discipline, globally as well as in the case of Portugal;
c) stimulate critical thinking in regard to the theoretical premises and research methodologies in the essential bibliography in each student's work towards their doctoral dissertation.

Teaching method
The theoretical component is introduced by the teacher and discussed in class, with the support of essential texts made available to the students. The practical component consists of the presentation in class by each student of the historical background of his/her dissertation subject (60% of the final grade) and of the submission of a critical review of a significant title from the bibliography used for that purpose (40%).

c) Main trends of the History of Historical Musicology, globally;

Discussion of issues of historical context in the doctoral dissertation projects of the students.
