Psycholinguistics

Objectives

By the end of the course, students should:
a) understand how language works and its connection with other domains of human cognition (atention, memory, reasoning)
b) describe the mechanisms and representations underlying language in the various grammar domains (phonology, morphology, sintax and semantics), both in comprehension and production, in written and spoken language
c) describe research methods in Psycholinguistics

Teaching method

Classes involve a theoretical component and a practical component. The practical work includes exercises, watching and commenting on documentaries, and discussing scientific papers.

Evaluation method

Assessment is based on:
(i) 2 written tests (70% - 35% each);

(ii) a written assignment (30%).

Subject matter

1. Psycholinguistics in the context of cognitive science

2. Language, brain and cognition

3. Speech perception and word recognition

4. Morphological processing: derived words and inflected words

5. Syntactic processing: syntactic ambiguity, filler-gap dependencies and referential dependencies

6. Language production: from conceptualisation to articulation

7. Research methodologies in psycholinguistics: priming, response times, eye tracking, brain imaging and electrophysiology
