Objectives

a) Develop a project involving field research
b) Be able to address multiple analysis strategies, organization and interpretation of data collected through field research
c) Be able to discuss the problems of ethnographic writing, using examples drawn from recent ethnomusicological monographs and the work done by students during the course
d) Be able to discuss ethnography theoretical perspectives, methods and techniques

Teaching method

Esta é uma unidade curricular de investigação e articula componente teórica (60%) e prática (40%), com trabalho de campo extra muros. Nos dois primeiros blocos prepara-se e realiza-se uma breve estadia de campo, para recolher informação para responder à questão de investigação, teoricamente enquadrada, entretanto proposta, e para testar as hipóteses previamente apresentadas. Nos dois últimos blocos procede-se ao tratamento dos dados, incluindo transcrição de entrevistas, e outros registos realizados, exercício de escrita de dois tipos de texto, respectivamente um relatório de organização de dados (texto 1) e um texto breve de escrita etnográfica (texto 2). Dado o carácter aberto e eminentemente pessoal da unidade podem acrescentar-se leituras e desenvolver-se trabalhos em torno de técnicas de campo diferentes.

Evaluation method

Método de avaliação - The assessment includes written and oral work according to the following ratio, to negotiate at the beginning of the course: texts 1 and 2(70%), oral presentations 1 and 2 (30%)
