Major Trends in the History of Music

Objectives

The student should:

a) develop methodological and conceptual skills in the area of the History of Western Music;

b) gain an overview of the principal issues, stylistic tendencies, personalities, institutions and musical genres of the History of Music;

c) earn the ability to contextualise the main musical phenomena of the different periods studied, from a historical, sociological and ideological perspective;

d) be aware of the principal musical repertoires of the various periods of the History of Music.

Teaching method

60% theoretical classes; 40% practical classes. The essential theoretical contents are exposed by the teacher, combining the theoritical exposition, discussion and analysis of historical documents, musicological texts and musical works including commented audition/visualization of musical examples.


The discussion with the students is encouraged, namely in the critical approach to a diverse set of relevant sources (scores, librettos, iconography, and other documents), there is also room for the clarification of questions.


The support materials will be made available on the Inforestudante platform.


The assessment consists of the following elements: one written test (40%); one research project (50%); and participation (10 %).

Subject matter

Questions of periodization in the History of Western Music from the Middle Ages to the Present. Constants in the analysis of musical phenomena down the ages. Specific aspects of culture and musical life in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods and the 20th and 21st centuries. Stylistic and formal questions during the various periods. Contextualization of the main musical phenomena of the different periods studied, from a historical, sociological and ideological perspective.
