Teaching method
The classes consist of theoretical component, providing explanation by the lecturer of the elements of the syllabus, and practical component, including aural, written, sung and piano exercises; the exercises come from the published didactic material, including online sources, and from the collection of exercises prepared by lectures in charge of the CU. In a course of theoretical and practical classes audiovisual resources and tools will be used, such as slide projection, search in streaming platforms will be realized, publication on theory of music and didactics and musical scores will be consulted.
Evaluation method
Evaluation is carried out through three tests throughout the semester (30% + 30% + 40%); the tests combine theoretical and aural elements.
Subject matter
1. Introduction to music theory - conceptual, methodological, terminological and historical issues.
2. Meter and rhythm. a) Beats; measures; introduction to musical syntax. b) Rhythm´s notation.
3. Pitch. a) Review of the types of tunning in art-music and folk-music of the various regions of the world. b) Western tradition: tempered tuning, tone and halftone, enharmonic equivalents, chromatic scales; c) The systems of solmization. d) Pitch notation: staff, clefs, accidentals.
4. Keyboard as a visual representation of the theory concepts. Introduction to functional and interpretive bases.
5. Tonality, major and minor scales; relative scales; the circle of fifths, key signatures.
6. Harmonic and melodic intervals, within the octave and beyond, diatonic and chromatic. Inversion of intervals.
7. Chords. Triads and its inversions, seventh chords and its inversions. Alien melodic notes.
8. Harmonic functions; cadences; sequences, introduction to modulation.
