Sociology of Everyday Life
Objectives
a) Questioning the sociological approach to everyday life through observation and analysis of everyday life. b) To know and understand the concepts and theoretical perspectives, emphasizing the sociological analysis of the processes of social interaction proposed by interactionism, phenomenology and ethnomethodology. c) To analyse and understand the practices and social processes of daily life from specific study objects, thus operationalizing the theoretical frameworks and methodological approches presented within the scope of the unit. d) Explore and problematise the relationship between the dynamics of daily life and the principles of social ordering related to one of the five thematic areas presented: daily life in marginal contexts; relational, affective and virtual daily lives; portraits and identities in everyday life; consumption in daily life and daily life in public space or in the city.

Teaching method
The teaching methodology adopted privileges the systematic and simultaneous interpretation of the unit contents through the discussion of current issues surrounding objects of daily life. The structuring of the unit into theoretical sessions, where the theoretical and conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches are exposed, and discussion sessions, based on practical examples, where students can visualise the operationalisation of theoretical and conceptual frameworks, acquiring the necessary skills to awaken them to the questions of the sociology of everyday life. The teaching methodology is centered on the student, who throughout the semester learns and applies the acquired concepts, with his/her autonomous and group work, with the fundamentals and application of the main strategies of empirical research. Particular importance is given to the continuous assessment that allows the student to, throughout the semester, demonstrate in a phased manner the skills acquired with his work and at the same time, articulate with the research methodologies in sociology of daily life.
Evaluation method
The assessment is divided into three components:
a) 2 individual exercises in class (30%)
b) 2 group exercises in the classroom (20%)
c) Group work (50%) - This work will include a theoretical and methodological framework and the collection of some empirical data.
At first, the groups will select an article published in Sociology scientific journals, previously selected by the teachers, which constitute examples of empirical investigation of objects of daily life. A total of 20 texts will be available on themes of daily life interactions (see point 3.), which vary each year. These articles mobilise theoretical and conceptual approaches taught in the lectures which support the empirical analysis of themes and problems of the sociology of everyday life. In a second moment, the groups select the theme on which they carry out an original work, integrating a theoretical and an empirical component. The evaluation will focus on the written paper (between 15 and 20 pages) and its discussion to be held during the classes (15 minutes presentation + 15 minutes discussion).
