Interactions between Africans and Portuguese

Objectives

This curricular unit intends to study the modes of Portuguese presence in
different spaces of Africa between the 15th and the 20th centuries. It will take as
its base for analysis the history of African-Portuguese relations, bearing in mind
the different circumstances surrounding these relations and the multiple
contexts of the African worlds involved. Through this mode of analysis, it
intends to articulate an understanding of the interactions between the
Portuguese presence and the role of African societies in establishing models of
interaction. This model will be used to look at the construction of new identities,
and will not exclude the participation of other Europeans where appropriate.
Students must be capable to:
- Develop a critical understanding in the examination of both sources and
historiographical perspectives
- Develop a non-luso-centric perspective on the Portuguese presence in Africa
- Deep a comparative analysis of the experiences of different African regions

encouraging participation in peer forums. There will be continuous assessment
of individual works presented during the period when the various topics are
being taught, through participation in peer forums and a final research project
on a theme and according to a working plan, which will be discussed in advance
and agreed during the teaching period. It is mandatory that the paper's
