Text Functioning

Objectives

By the end of the unit students are expected to:
a) relate social activities, purposes of action and text genres;
b) know and recognize a large array of textual genres related to different activities or professional situations;
c) master the contextual, macro-organizational and linguistic plans implied in the functioning of texts;
d) distinguish texts from related genres, in the same activity or in different activities, taking into account explicit criteria of contextual, macro-organizational and linguistic orders;
e) evaluate the quality of texts from different genres, taking into account explicit criteria (contextual, macro-organizational and linguistic);
f) adequately and firmly judge the relation between texts (really produced) and genres (or models) accepted or explicitly required in one specific activity.

Teaching method

Methodologically, we will favour a seminar-type work, by involving students in the discussion of readings, presentation of analysis or other tasks, which will be previously scheduled following the guidelines of the programme. Whenever necessary, and in accordance with specific topics of the programme, some sessions (or parts of sessions) will be mainly theoretical.

Evaluation method

Evaluation method - the evaluation will be based on the elaboration of a portfolio(30%), under the supervision of the teacher. Each portfolio will be composed of: a component of collection and analysis of data, on the one hand, and a theoretically and methodologically motivated written component. The final classification will favour the progression of each student.(70%)

Subject matter

1. Social activities, action purposes and texts. The role of text genres; contextual factors and textual architecture.
2. Parameters for the description of the (physical and sociosubjective) context. Bases and patterns of production and circulation.
3. Textual architecture: general infrastructure, mechanisms of textualization and of enunciative responsibility.
4. General infrastructure of texts: thematic and discursive organization. Specificity of text plans in different genres and/or activities.
5. Textualization mechanisms: referential cohesion and marking of text plans. Required linguistic structures and forms.
6. Mechanisms of enunciative responsibility. Modality and modalization as the linguistic expression of points of view.
7. Aspects of the relation between the linguistic plan and other semiotic systems.
8. Interrelation between social activities, contextual factors and linguistic resources.
9. Relations between texts and text genres: (im)possibilities of adaptation.
