Comparative Education
Objectives
- To comparatively analyze core issues of the structure and functioning of education systems on a global scale, including those associated with the restructuring of education at the international level and its reorganization in Europe as well as in the Luso-african-Brazilian space.
- To understand the effects of globalization processes, in particular through supranational regulatory mechanisms, and to analyze their impact at the national and local levels;
- To analyze the mechanisms of production, distribution and circulation of educational discourses on a global scale and its relation with policy and reform implementation locally and nationwide;
- To develop a critical attitude towards prevailing conceptions about the main problems regarding the development of education systems in historical and current perspective, particularly with regard to changes in the area of curriculum, teacher training and policy organization, and in the area of management and evaluation of education.

Teaching method
Classes will be organized around theoretical readings and analysis of reports produced by international agencies. Students follow the exposition of themes through previously indicated readings, in order to participate in discussions and develop their individual and group assessment elements.
Evaluation method
Continuous assessment - Activities carried out in the classroom(10%), Participation in a work group(40%), Preparation of a critical essay on one of the topics covered by the syllabus in which students will develop a reflection on themes addressed during teaching sessions, based on the recommended literature, demonstrating reasoning skills, organization, synthesis and critical sense(50%)
Subject matter
1. Comparative Education
Theoretical traditions, disciplinary perspectives and research methodologies;
The historical constitution of the field and the main theoretical approaches that have marked its epistemological identity;
Comparison as social science and as reform reflexively conducted at the international level.
2. Origins and development of modern education systems (XIX - XXI)
The historical development of educational systems and the diffusion of the school worldwide;
The organization of education systems in Europe and its diffusion to the colonial peripheries;
The demographic, social and cultural impacts of former colonial empires on national education systems.
3. Core issues in Comparative Education
The institutionalization of a global discourse on education;
The definition of international commitments around common educational goals and objectives;
The role of international agencies in policy making and worldwide practices of comparison.
