Civil Engineering (Structures and Geotechnics)

Education objectives

The Master in Civil Engineering - Structures and Geotechnics, created in 2007/2008, aims to provide scientific and applied advanced training in the field of Structures and Geotechnics, covering topics of recent developments and economic, safe, sustainable and innovative civil engineering techniques. It is the only 2nd cycle program at the national level offering training that adds skills in the areas of Structures and Geotechnics.

The course promotes the development of the necessary skills in tasks of analysis, design, and assessment of structures under conventional and severe environmental loading conditions. Importance is attributed to professional aspects covered by the new European regulations, the ability to work as a team and respect for ethical and deontological standards. In addition, the degree provides the theoretical basis for possible access to the PhD programs.

It is aimed at national and foreign candidates, with or without professional experience, seeking for lifelong learning opportunities, new possibilities for further studies or additional and innovative skills that can foster a successful professional insertion.

The quality of training obtained by graduates is recognized by new employers and by the candidates´ previous employers. The excellent teacher-student relationship and the ability to integrate different cultures stands out.

Career opportunities

Professional opportunities include positions in civil engineering construction companies, firms in civil engineering projects and geotechnical engineering, participation in planning studies and environmental impact of large engineering works, research and academic institutions or create their own start-ups.

Graduates will be qualified to participate in studies of seismic risk, design and rehabilitation of civil and industrial structures, design of bridges and dams, containment of soil, tunnels, embankments, port infrastructure and works lacking the training provided at this Masters.

Evaluation rules

The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.

The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.

All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).

All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.

For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.

The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
