Physiology
Objectives
To understand how the major organic systems work, namely the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous and renal systems, in a physiological approach (i.e., non-pathological), as well as to understand the regulatory mechanisms underneath. In particular, the student should be capable to describe the regulatory mechanisms of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, used herein as models os physiological regulation.
The student should also be able to interpret the functional meaning of the major physiological parameters.
Finally, the student will know the basic concepts related to the histological caracterization of the major tissues: epithelial, connective, nervous and muscular.

Teaching method
Physiology Course teaching is based on:
- Theoretical Classes: expository method, with occasional use of demonstrations and/or discussion of clinical cases.
- Practical classes: problem solving and analysis, using Physiology simulators; discussion of clinical cases.
Evaluation method
The assessment will consist of two components, Theoretical and Practical, and the final classification in the CU of Physiology results from the weighted average between the two: 60% of the Theoretical assessment and 40% of the Practical assessment. The parameters and evaluation moments will be as follows:
1) Theoretical component (60%): The classification of the Theoretical component will be obtained through the score of two individual assessment tests, carried out in season 1.
2) Practical component (40%): The evaluation of the Practical component will be calculated through the arithmetic average between the classifications obtained in the Practical Mini-Tests (20%, each one contributing 10% to the final classification) and the evaluation obtained during the Classes Practices, this calculated through the arithmetic mean of the classifications obtained in the 3 protocols delivered (3 x 5 % = 15 %) and the attendance (maximum of 5 %; 1 absence - 4 %, 2 absences - 3 %, 3 absences - 2 % , 4 absences - 1%, 5 absences - 0 %).
The final evaluation will be from 0-20 values, rounded to the nearest unit. Rounding will only be carried out in the calculation of the final classification of the "Physiology", and rounding will not be carried out in the calculation of partial assessments.
In order to successfully complete the "Physiology" (approval), the student will have to obtain approval - classification greater than or equal to 10 values. Approval in the Practical component is valid for 2 academic years.
Only students who pass the Practical component can take the Appeals Exam.
The appeal exam will cover all the contents
