Air Quality and Noise Management

Objectives

This course aims to provide theoretical and practical information on air pollution and noise, including concepts and definitions, the ability to solve problems and define mitigation measures, all in line with the existing legislative framework.

At the end of this course the student will have acquired knowledge and skills to:

- Understand the main air quality concepts and indicators, main pollutants and processes, and design of mitigation measures;

- Understand the main noise concepts and noise indicators, process noise maps and design of mitigation measures;

- Be able to contribute to assessments of the state of the environment in both the air quality and noise components in real projects situations, with full knowledge of the health implications that cause air and noise pollution, developing integrated approaches and solutions.

Teaching method

Depending of the specific area there would be either a more explanatory or a more exploratory component approach. Homework by small student groups have to be performed. There is a discussion period with research aspect brought by student in every class.

Evaluation method

Three tests or one exam (50%); minimum grade 9.5 in total, involving multiple choice, open questions, and oral discussion. Three homeworks (50%)  - individual or in groups of two; minimum grade 9.5 in total.

 

Subject matter

Air quality:

Main concepts. The spatial and temporal scales of air pollution. Air pollution control integrated view. Sources and effects. Emission inventories. Acidification and eutrophication associated with air pollutants. Atmospheric chemistry. National and European legislation. Air quality index. Pollutants monitoring in ambient-air and emissions. Characterization of the national situation on emissions and air quality. Fixed and mobile sources control. Air quality modelling. Integration of control measures in plans and programmes and interface with climate policies. Indoor air quality.

Noise:

Acoustic phenomena - type, the acoustic spectrum, octaves and 1/3 octaves. Low frequency noise. Characterization of acoustic phenomena. National and European legislation. Effects for human health. Occupational exposure. Noise maps. Noise measurements. Control and mitigation. Evaluation in environmental impact assessment studies.
