Master in Mechanical Engineering

Education objectives

The main objective of the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at NOVA FCT is to teach Engineers to: investigate, design, optimise, manufacture, implement, operate, maintain and manage several complex and high-added value mechanical and electromechanical systems, in environments of multidisciplinary collaboration, in a VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world).

At the same time, it is a Master that allows students to:

  • develop skills to design and manage complex systems;
  • characterise market needs, define them, deduce a product design, its manufacturing and the marketing process;
  • prepare business plans to develop an entrepreneurial idea;
  • acquire skills to develop critical and structured thinking that allows addressing society''''s problems and formulating solution proposals;
  • develop skills for pursuing a Doctoral Degree at any university.

Career opportunities

The broadband nature of the teaching provided in the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering lead to the diversification of professional opportunities associated with it. Simultaneously, computing and information technologies in the fields of Mechanical Engineering have opened prospects for very attractive career opportunities, namely in the digitalisation of conception, design and production; in industrial and robotic automation; or in system simulation.

In this way, MEMc provides adequate training for activities in the following domains:

  • design of machines and diverse equipment;
  • manufacturing processes;
  • thermodynamics and aerodynamics;
  • structural mechanics;
  • hydraulic and pneumatic equipment;
  • management of energy resources;
  • engineering consultancy;
  • teaching and research;
  • management and maintenance in the area of different industries and services.

Evaluation rules

The evaluation of all UCs is continuous for all the components that integrate it, and it must be completed by the last day of the school term of the academic semester.

The continuous evaluation of a UC must include a minimum of three elements in the set of evaluation components, on dates adequately spaced throughout the period of classes.

All UCs with a theoretical-practical evaluation component must provide, in addition, a form of evaluation of this component by exam, to be carried out after the period of classes (Examination of Appeal).

All requirements and conditions related to the evaluation of the UC, namely the minimum weights and classifications, if any, of each component, as well as the Frequency conditions, are defined a priori and, mandatorily, published in the Discipline Form.

For each UC, combinations of three evaluation components are allowed: (i) Theoretical-practical evaluation; (ii) Laboratory or project evaluation; (iii) Summative assessment.

The final Dissertation (or Project) involves a public discussion with a Jury.
