Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Objectives

- Evaluate the climate profiles of the various geographical areas of Portugal;

- Calculate heat transfer coefficients of building envelopes, framing them in regulatory requirements;

- Determine internal dissipation loads in buildings, due to occupancy, equipment, lighting, among others;

- Determining ventilation volume rates and flows in buildings, based on pollutant emissions and/or regulatory or other requirements;

- Determining the environmental conditions to be achieved inside the buildings, either from the point of view of human comfort, or due to constraints on the processes carried out there;

- Know the main HVAC&R technological systems and equipments;

- Determine the thermal and energy needs of buildings, with the aid of computational calculation;

- Dimensioning the capacities required for the HVAC&R systems and their components.

- Develop comparative technical-economic studies between HVAC&R solutions, based on estimates of investment costs versus operating/maintenance costs;

Skills to be acquired in the Curricular Unit:

- It is intended that students acquire adequate skills for the preparation of studies and projects for technical installations of HVAC&R in buildings.

Prerequisites

For the discipline of Climatization and Refrigeration it is supposed a strong domain of subjects learned in the disciplines of Applied Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, TAMF, and Heat Transmission.

Teaching method

The teaching methodology followed will be mixed, comprising a theoretical part and a practical part, in which there will always be monitoring of students in the preparation of the work proposed in the curricular unit, namely using computer tools, spreadsheets, abacuses, manuals, etc.

Evaluation method

Four works are proposed to be developed by the students throughout the academic semester which will constitute the basis of a preliminary project of an HVAC&R system.

The final classification will be calculated by the sum of the scores of the four papers, a maximum of 20 points.

The proposed works and respective maximum classifications will be:

1. Determination of the climate profile: 3 points;

2. Programmatic evaluation of spaces to be air-conditioned: 7 points;

3. Characterization of HVAC&R systems and thermal calculations: 4 points;

4. Final work (HVAC&R preliminary project): 6 points.

Current regulations on the subject;

Specialty manuals and literature (CARRIER, ASHRAE, REHVA, among others);

Introduction to HVAC&R systems in buildings;

Calculation of thermal loads and thermal energy balance in buildings;

Sizing and selection of equipment to incorporate in HVAC systems, namely chilled water production units, heated water production units, air treatment units, fans, fan coils, circulators, among others;
